2 Sam 1:11-13

2 Samuel 1:11-13King James Version (KJV)
11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of theLord, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

2 Samuel 1:11-13
BBE11Then David gave way to bitter grief, and so did all the men who were with him:12And till evening they gave themselves to sorrow and weeping, and took no food, weeping for Saul and for Jonathan, his son, and for the people of the Lord and for the men of Israel; because they had come to their end by the sword.13And David said to the young man who had given him the news, Where do you come from? And he said, I am the son of a man from a strange land; I am an Amalekite.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

11 This is a sign of mourning and grief. It was also common to put dust or ashes on your head as well during mourning.

12 They mourned for both Saul and Jonathan. Jonathan was David’s friend but Saul hated David but that did not matter now. David being a Godly man mourned for both. Was not gad the one who wanted him dead had died, this is how many of us would act instead David shows compassion.

13 Now after the time of mourning David addresses the man again, wanting handle the matter of him stating that he killed Saul.

'Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them;
and likewise all the men that were with him:
And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even,
for Saul, and
for Jonathan his son, and
for the people of the Lord, and
for the house of Israel;
because they were fallen by the sword.
And David said unto the young man that told him,
"Whence art thou?" And he answered,
"I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite."

Yes, Clark,

Tearing their clothes was a sign of mourning. The King was the first to rend his clothes in mourning, the men that were with him followed. Romans 12:15 tells us to, 'Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.'

Saul had been God's anointed, and time and again when David had opportunity to do Saul harm, though his enemy, he behaved with grace, and showed Saul that he would not harm God's anointed. Jonathan, as we know, David loved, and for him his grief would have been intense.

It is significant that it should be an Amalekite that killed Saul, in the light of Saul's downfall being linked with them (1 Sam. 15), isn't it? It could only have been a stranger who could have aided Saul in his death, for his own men would have been in awe of the fact that he was God's anointed.

Interesting. Thank you, Clark,

Hi Clark,

See 1 Samuel 31 and 1 Chronicles 10. I was mistaken, my memory played me false. The Amalekite of course did not kill Saul.
