I worked as a fire fighter for 22 years of my 30 year emergency services career. Every single day that I left the house to go to work could easily have been my last, and there were situations wherein I did indeed believe I was drawing my last breaths on this earth. Because of this experience, and also because my family has a strong military tradition, I have a very special regard for those who serve their country by serving in the military. Sometimes it is hard for regular citizens to fathom that uniformed personnel are prepared to forfeit their lives for perfect strangers - for you and me, good, bad and in-between. Our military personnel are certainly worthy of our attentive prayers for their safety and for the success of their ability to protect our way of life. For many of them, long after their career is over, they continue to pay a steep price for their service through both physical and psychological injuries. May the Lord bless and protect them, and bring them home to their families whole in body, mind, and soul. In Jesus' name. Amen.

My father went to Europe some months before the end of W.W.I. and served in the US Army Motor Corp driving various generals including General John J. Pershing. He served for two more years with the Army of Occupation in Germany after the war. One of his trips was to drive someone (I think likely one of the generals to view the graves in Belgium at Flanders Fields where hundreds of fallen American soldiers were buried. Among the graves he saw the name of one of his buddies. I remember he also wrote a poem somewhat like John McCrea's famous one.."In Flander's Fields"

Today many visit this historical site and remember the "fallen boys" over there. Let us not forget them and all who have come after them in other wars. While there my father got influenza in the awful epidemic and spent some time recovering in a military hospital. We think the virus was bad enough to damage his heart because he died prematurely when I was a little girl, a delayed causality of the Great War. My brother and sister served in W.W.II and my mother worked in a plant during those years. It comes back to me on special national holidays and I so remember them, my other family, and the many friends who were either serving or volunteering on the home front. Gone now, but so well remembered. Bless all here at CFS on this Memorial Day weekend!

Please Remember those who are Still Serving in our Military and Other Offices who each day wake up knowing if they go to work it may be their last day on earth.

Praying Psalm 91 over them daily.

Blessings

Thank you for posting this FC Jim! Did you serve in the military?

My Dad served in the Air Force as a navigator and did two tours in Vietnam. In 1967 I was 10 and was very scared for him. But when I said goodbye, he grabbed me, had a brave look on his face and remember him saying something like this, "I'll be back, son, take care of your brothers and sister. Be there for your Mom." His second tour was in 1972.

My younger brothers both served, one for 6 years in 1981 and the other in 1984 for 20 years and then retired. In my second year of college, 1977, I took the Armed Forces test and failed. I never got to experience boot camp, being deployed or where I was going to be stationed. I believe the Lord has His assignment for those who served in Armed Forces but had another plan for me.

God bless you, brother!

I would like to join you in your Memorial Day.

We in the UK have Remembrance Day (Armistice Day) where we remember all those who have fallen. It falls on the second Sunday of November. Poppies (the flowers) are symbolic, for the poppy fields in France, where so many soldiers died during WW1. Poppies are sold, badges etc, to raise money for veterans. Everyone wears poppies. A two minute silence is also held at 11am (we don't have the problem of different time zones on our little island) across the country. Cars stop. Schools stop. Everything stops. It can feel quite eerie. But I think it should, in order to remember.

Blessings to all my friends in the USA, and to all those who are remembered.

Thank you for sharing this! It's neat to know what other countries celebrate and why.

Blessings to you!

"They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun,
And in the morning,
We will remember them."
