Life and Death according to the Word of God

bobinfaith said.... "I want to share with everyone and get your thoughts. I have had good, stimulating discussions with other believers, and new believers regarding death and here are the different questions or comments I get;

When someone dies from a major illness, murder, suicide, or substance abuse, for example, is it God's will?

90% of people who lived a long and God filled life, at some time, die because of health deterioration from old age. Is it God's will?

If it isn't the Lord taking us or our loved ones at His appointed time, or if the enemy saw an opportunity to take him or her out <-- I agree with this,

then the question is, if it wasn't God's will, then was God still with the loved one dying, or standing over to the side?

What is the truthful, biblical thing to say when a loved one dies?

From my personal devotional reading of the Word of God, this is what I believe and share, In the Old Testament death was not in God's original plan. It was a result of the first sin committed by Adam and Eve. In the New Testament, In the last days, Christ will defeat Satan (the enemy), evil and death.

In Genesis 2:17, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

In 1 Corinthians 15:25-26, 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death."

So I thought we could start a thread to discuss what The Word of God says, so please keep this in line with Scripture...

When someone dies from a major illness, murder, suicide, or substance abuse, for example, is it God's will?

According to 2 Peter 3:9.. it's not God's will that any should perish

And Romans 8:2 says that through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

James 1:14 says each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed

And if a person is not walking according to the spirit, but according to the flesh... they are subject to the curse. (Deut 28, Galatians 5:16-17)

90% of people who lived a long and God filled life, at some time, die because of health deterioration from old age. Is it God's will?

God gives each person 120 years to live on this earth (Genesis 6:3) and it's each person's responsibility to take care of the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19). This includes meditation on the Word and keeping it in our eyes and ears, hearts and in our mouths (Joshua 1:8, ps 1:2-3 prov. 4:20-23, Romans 10:8, 10, 12, 17)

We all have a job to do and when we have finished running our race... we are free to go. Deterioration is not necessarily God's design, but a result of the curse. And if we can put all the above into effect.. then we can have divine health... but we have to stand strong on the Word and keep death words out of our mouths.

If it isn't the Lord taking us or our loved ones at His appointed time, or if the enemy saw an opportunity to take him or her out <-- I agree with this,

then the question is, if it wasn't God's will, then was God still with the loved one dying, or standing over to the side?

God's Word says He never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

What is the truthful, biblical thing to say when a loved one dies?

Tactfully and sympathetically letting the person or people know that we are praying for their comfort.
We are not sorry about the loss because the the Bible says sorrow not. But we rejoice with them because their loved one is in Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8). And we encourage them that God is taking very good care of them and they are still alive. Because death was defeated for the believer by Christ, who made an open show of the enemy. (Colossians 1:18, 2:15)

120 Jubilees... not years. No one lived to 120 years. They either lived 900 years or 70/80 with few exceptions. In fact the Hebrew word means "revolution of time". Which means it could be just as easily 120 days, or months, or moons... It's more likely to be jubilees. Which the 120th ends in 2025. 6000 / 50 = 120. Which means it'll be God's way on earth, not man's.

Interesting assumption.. to be jubilees instead of years like all our Bibles say. Even Science backs up 120 years.

I can agree that possibly your right in regards to our Lord's return.... but there can be a meaning on a more personal level.

70-80 or 120 lifespan for a believer is a matter of what a person believes

I want to thank you all for this thought provoking and interesting thread and posts.

I was thinking too that God cannot forsake us, as it's stated many times in the bible. It was the first thing that popped in my head.
Though I do wonder if it was meant for the righteous, believer and doer of the Word.
You'll have to excuse me on this topic, I've not read Hebrews just yet.

The believer is the only one who has a covenant or legal binding contract with God. And because of kingdom laws or the ways God has stated things in His Word, there are certain stipulations.... I think John 14:21 explains it well.

We have to be in line with God's ways to be fully protected. And it's not being perfect at it all... but repenting any time we goof..... restoring the righteousness that God has given us through Christ's blood and it is continuous as long as we sincerely repent

If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

Hello, Abdicate;

Thank you for sharing. Please elaborate. Your post is a discussion of Biblical context and interpretation of the formula years x jubilee in Genesis 6. How would you simplify this to minister to a brother or sister who's loved one passes away for various reasons?

God bless you and your family.

Greetings Brother ,
I don't mean any disrespect unto you and your studies what so ever.

If I wrote you a long letter and you began to divide up my sentences and Began To Look Up The Etymological Roots Of The Words I Used - You Can go off on all kinds of tangents - About Things I Had No Intent on Saying.

One does not want to dissect God's Words so Intellectually that they end up making God's Word say things it's not.

The 70-80 year life span for man is a doctrine of demons. Meaning man has accepted this and has been teaching and preaching and Speaking this for generation after generation as God saying man will only live that long.

Fact is......this was a Punishment For People who Disobeyed Him. They even spoke He has cut our life short.
Joshua and Caleb were just as strong in their 80's as they were in their twenties and they went forth and possessed the Land.

Man can lengthen or shorten his days.
It's a pointed 120 years.

The words "life span" aren't even in the Hebrew. It's "rotation period" which can mean any repetitive time length. The fact that people lived upwards of 900 years at this time, can lead one to believe that the shortening of a man's life after the flood is in answer to this statement. But even after 467 years from the flood, Abraham still lived to be 175, Isaac 180, Jacob 147. And finally, Moses lived 120, Joshua 110, Eli was 98, David pens Psa 90:10 stating "the days of our years" would be 70 or 80 which was 1318 years from the flood. Other than Moses no one lived to 120, not even on average. 4336 years later, today our life span is 78.9 years in the USA. Therefore, I believe Gen 6:3 is referring to something else. The word strive is used in this verse, and it mean to judge. Judgments are swift. Just my thoughts.

Careful what you call demonic doctrine Jim,

Psalms 90:10 (KJV)
The days of our years are threescore years and ten (70); and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years (80), yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Of Course Abdicate, (y)
Let us look at this for a moment.
David is Writing from a prayer of Moses.
Moses was leading those who ended up getting their lives shortened Because of Disobedience.

David is not speaking out from revelation but from writings of Moses.
Man takes this and builds a doctrine and preaches, teaches and speaks it.

God said 120 years and man takes David's Writings of what Moses said the 70 - 80 years and accepted it as God's Will for man

Now who do we know that would be behind this and want man's life shortened and need man to not only speak it but teach it?

Hello Via Dolarossa;

You're correct and agree with you. God will not forsake us and thats the promise of His presence. I feel its important to know He is in the presence of all we do and say, and it should be our delight in this, to honor Him.

Yes, please get a chance to read Hebrews. Once at Bible study there was a discussion about who the author was and I made light that it was written by a Godly man. She said if it was written by a woman would it then be called She-brews? lol!

God bless you, Via Dolarossa!

bobinfaith the devotion that came through today is on this subject so i felt led to post it... and to suggest that maybe preaching a sermon or two on this for your members would be a good thing (got that in prayer last night). Something to pray about anyway :)

No More Dying to Do

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

– Hebrews 2:9

Death. It’s not a popular topic—even among believers. In fact, a great many are just plain scared of it. Oh yes, they talk about having eternal life. Yet when the devil tries to threaten their earthly survival with sickness or calamity, they panic.

Why? Because they haven’t learned to look at death through God’s eyes. Even though their spirit has been made immortal, they haven’t renewed their minds to include that truth. If they had, when the devil tried to push their panic button, they’d just laugh and say, “You can’t scare me, Devil. I’ve done all the dying I’m ever going to do!”

That’s true, you know. The Word of God says that you, as a born-again believer, are never going to see death (John 8:51). Jesus has been your substitute. He suffered death so you wouldn’t have to. And He was raised from death, Hebrews 2:14-15 says, “Destroy[ing] him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver[ing] them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

If you’ve made Jesus the Lord of your life, the only death you’ll ever experience is behind you now. It occurred the instant you received Christ. At that moment, your old self—the one whose nature was to sin and rebel against God—died. Your body didn’t die, but your spirit man—the real you—died to Satan and all of his works. You became “a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17), immortal and absolutely incapable of death!

When you’re finished with your work on the earth, you’re not going to die. You’ll simply shed your earthly shell and relocate to a far more glorious place.

Go to the Word and get God’s perspective on death. Make a study of it. Once the reality of your immortality begins to dawn on you, the devil will never be able to threaten you with it again.

Hello, Cturtle and FC Jim;

I was thinking about this as well. I follow a 1 year preaching schedule and feel led to present this message in August or September. My church family and myself need to learn more the scriptural teachings of death and God. Some confess they are fearful of death.

God bless you and thank you for your prayers and suggestions.

Thank you Bob for the blessings for us.

Many just don't realize that death is transition for a believer. I was afraid of it for many many years. Only recently (past 2 years or so), have our pastors talked about it in such a way that has brought light to the darkness and freed me from the fear. (Hebrews 2:14-15)

We will keep your message lifted up for much revelation knowledge to come to your study time in preparation.

God bless you and your wife and church

I love this passage too.
Can I quote this to my little old ladies?

Why not? Are they saved or know Jesus? If not you can read to them the gospels to tell them about Jesus or any other parts of the new testament that talks about Jesus ... as long as no one complains where you work... And then ask God to give them a moment that they can understand so that they can accept jesus and then you will see them in Heaven. And if it's not meant to be that they leave (transition to heaven) you also can believe God for full restoration and healing

God has a sovereign will that includes everybody and then he has specific wills that are for certain people. The bible is full of examples, Gideon and Moses stand out for me. We will all die, well maybe some people will be fortunate enough to be raptured. Death comes to all, and life is vanity according the Solomon the wisest and richest man to ever live.
