Anyone want to read together?

Job is so inspiring. At the beginning Satan says he only praises and obeys God because he is wealthy, successful and had everything he needed and more. Job proved without doubt that this is not the case. It’s so easy to praise when everything is going well but much harder when not, especially when you feel prayers are not being answered. I have learnt over the years that patience is essential (and difficult) and I love my God, no matter what, in fact during tougher times I love him more, if that is possible.

[Psa 8:1-9 KJV]
1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. 2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all [things] under his feet: 7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, [and whatsoever] passeth through the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent [is] thy name in all the earth!

Last week I read an article that a church member posted on his fb page, the title was, Have Bible Quoters Replaced Bible Readers?
It made the valid and obvious point about how so many of us tend to reference quotes, but many times they may not be in quite the right context...
Anyway, while discussing it in our Bible study group, we decided we would challenge ourselves and fellow church members to read the Bible all the way through, in chronological order. (The reading schedule lists about 3 or 4 chapters per day.)
And because we can never get too much of God's holy word, I thought I would extend that request here as well.
So, I was wondering if any of you might be interested in all of us doing a year-long read of the Bible together. And as we learn new things, or have questions, we could discuss them as we come to them.
Any takers?

Hello Mig;

I thank our God for the posts that we are all reading and continual learning in our Bible study.

Well said in your post! It reminds me of two moments. The times when my wife and I felt we had plenty and it took the place of our God. But once it was depleted, there was nothing there but God. What a tough lesson to learn. Praise Him for His lessons.

There was also the times when we were struggling with need and no matter what, we were not going to be moved in our faith, did our part besides prayer, and when we least expected, God delivered.

I'm not talking just about stuff, but the LOVE, being others-centered, forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration in our relationships. All these are needs and God does provide them.

How much more is God faithful when we are patient, and you're right. When we love our God, doesn't patience with Him help?

God bless you, Mig, and your family.

Awesome! If you're doing that much reading and studying, then you'll certainly be able to jump in. It's ok if we're not all in the same place at the same time. What matters is that we're all learning and growing in God's word :)

[Psa 23:1-6 KJV]
1 The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Thoughts on Job...Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it was for a rich man to enter heaven - Job was really wealthy to begin with...but them he had nothing He still believed God, so I guess it shows we must be willing to give up everything because we cant take it with us. I mean sackcloth and ashes is like the lowest Job could go and he did that.

The second time satan tried to get Job was not through his wealth but through his health. How often so people boast they are strong and mighty or fit and healthy and despise the weak (and poor) instead of having compassion. We see that today with people trying to put through euthansia bills just get rid if anyone who is weak and sick or afflicted. Job spoke of wanting to end his life or not even to be born such was his despair.

What was Jobs problem well it wasnt that he was fearful, he was Godfearing and that is a good thing to be, thats the beginning of wisdom. Satan tried to get Job through pride. Pride in his wealth and pride in his health. But i see people on their deathbeds still believing and praising God. Children with terminal illnesses..they still believe in God. They may never see adulthood but are thankful for every breath God gives them. For many people this test becomes real when they face affliction or even death. I think many people could be in the position Job was in, he had a good lifestyle, lots of camels and oxen, big family. Well respected. Pillar of community. Does many good works.

What happens when that is all taken away? What happens when someone who usually is a giver, needs to ask for help? It would be like the Queen gets evicted from buckingham palace and has to live in a council flat.

Well Jesus gave up heaven to come to earth and be born in a lowly stable where there was not even room for him at the inn!

Thank you Bob for your reply and your blessings, very much appreciated. What you say about love is so true; it took me years to realise the full concept of forgiveness and I still struggle being ‘others-centred’! My patience has improved but I have a very long way to go! Loving my God is paramount, he does so much for me and I always pray that he will guide me to be this better person that I strive to be.
God bless you.

What is the truth behind this scripture?

FCJ ;)
Hello FCJ,
I have never thought about the ‘truth behind this scripture’ and really look forward to hearing comments. I have used it an awful lot usually when I am looking for calm and peace or having a difficult time. It reminds me of what the Lord does for me and how he guides me and gives me so much. I usually imagine us walking along, side by side, besides beautiful rivers and surrounded by green, luscious fields, it’s always bright and sunny. Thinking about it now just makes me smile and feel blessed.
Thank you for making me think about it properly, rather than just quickly reading through this familiar Psalm.
I know I have done the right thing joining this site and am amazed at how he guided me here.
Blessings to everyone.

Lanolin, I enjoyed reading your post, it’s very insightful particularly your linking of Job to the Queen and to Jesus in the stable. Makes you think! (I’ve no doubt the Queen would manage too! Such a strong, amazing lady!)

Going back to genesis... as I was reading about Cain and his conversation with The Father, the Holy Spirit helped me to remember a part of a sermon I herd...

When the Father was telling Cain he was going to be a wanderer and that the land would no longer produce for him... Cain added to it, and the Father in His mercy and grace provided a way to protect him, because of his own words. The Father even had much grace when He warned him about what he was feeling towards his brother.

What an awesome Father we have! He has so much love and grace towards His children and creation :) and everything He tells us to do is for our benefit. To keep us from premature death or being harassed by the devil. To keep us from opening the door to the enemy... so we can stay blessed and safe surrounded by His grace and mercy ps 3:3

I think to some degree, we are all given our own sort of Job "challenge"..
-Sometimes we fail to be thankful, especially while things are going good..
-When things go bad, do we thank God, curse Him, beg Him, challenge Him, or deny Him?
- Are we like one of Job's 3 friends, or are we like Elihu, or maybe Job's wife... or like those who spit on him?
-Would we be like the "good neighbor"... or simply go along on our way.
-Or maybe even relate to one of the creatures or beasts mentioned in some way.
There is so much contained in Job's story. Also, is the any other place in the Bible where we are given a one-on-one dialogue straight from God himself? Basically face to "whirlwind"? (I don't know.)
But here God personally reveals so much about Himself... it's just beautiful.

What was Jobs
I have heard it said in some Bible study classes, that his "weakness" was anxiety/fear that his children would sin.. and so he made regular sacrafices on their behalf.. while the story talks about a bit, I'm not completely convinced on that arguement... if that were the case, then his "friends" would have been somewhat right in their thoughts that it was somehow his fault. But they say that was why God pointed him out to satan.. because he did have that anxiety and feeling of fear as a weakness, or open door that allowed satan an entry...

Job not only made sacrifices for his children's sins he spoke his fear quite often. And his fear opened the door for satan to bring destruction.

If we read the dialogue between The Father and satan.... we can see that satan was the one who sought out job... And brought him up to the Father

Job 1:8 ylt....And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, 'Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'

Satan had been trying to break through the hedge of protection that the Father had already built around job and was not happy he could not find a way to penetrate that hedge.

Job was a huge influence in his time and place (country) not only was he rich, he had many influential people coming to him for advice... so in a way this righteous man was ruling his territory.. which meant The Father was in control nd satan didn't like that.. so he sought out to destroy him.. like he still does today with all of Father's children

1 Blessed [is] the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4 The ungodly [are] not so: but [are] like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

I would have to cheat and use google to see what you mean by mis-used. So I don't know. Would you be so kind as to teach us a bit about what you mean?
