Who Saves?

The short answer is, of course, our Sovereign Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. but is that how we really think and is that how we really talk and is that how we really act?

What brought this to mind was a dream I had last night. My young teen son and I were in a long, narrow rowboat kinda crowded with other people. We were on a calm lake. While I was on the bow, my son fell overboard off the stern. I wasn't too worried, we are both good swimmers and I am a trained lifeguard, but with all the other people on board it took me a while to get back there to help him. In the meantime the boat was moving forward, further away from him. While I was working my way back a buddy of my son, I'll call "Eddie", dove over the stern to help him. "That's good, but kinda unnecessary." I thought. Shortly later I dove after him, and being a strong swimmer, was catching up. But before we got to my son, he went under! Uh, oh... Well, we were almost there, and I can dive really deep and can hold my breath a loooong time (which is true). Eddie soon reached the spot and dove underwater. Shortly after I did, too. Although the water was fairly clear and not very deep, the bottom was covered with a deep layer of soft mud. My son, my only son, was somewhere hidden in that mud with only minutes to be Saved or to die. As I was trying to decide the best place to start, Eddie reached confidently down into the mud with both hands and pulled him up. We got my son back to the boat where he quickly revived. When I asked Eddie, he said he had seen and knew where my son went into the mud; it wasn't a lucky guess. Of course I was very grateful to Eddie and humbled by the experience. Eddie showed no sign of Pride or superiority. What Eddie did is just what Eddie does.

After waking up and pondering about the dream, I realized that it was a Salvation story, with Eddie being Christ himself. The crowded rowboat was probably a Church building with full pews going on with what Churches do, not really noticing when someone is in trouble.

Anyhoo, it isn't the Church that saves, nor the Pastor, nor the preaching, nor the parents or buddies, or sports or the government. Not even the Bible, the Roman Road, giving to the poor, confessing our sins, or this Forum. ;) It is not even our Faith, although you could say that is why Christ decides he will save us. It is Christ Himself that does the Saving and no one and nothing else. And why? Because the Savior Saves, that is just what He does.
