Here is something to ponder:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13: 34 – 35 (NIV)).

As I look back at my life, I do not think I have ever actually hated anyone. There are people I did not enjoy being around, and some I try to avoid as much as possible, but I do not recall ever having felt the emotion of hate.

My life has required me to be around drug dealers, pedophiles, thieves, rapists, and murderers, yet I know that I have never hated any of them. I wonder if it’s just that I do not know what hate feels like?

I also have issues feeling joy, so maybe I am just emotionless? When my wife finished her master’s degree, there was a party, family flew in, and she walked to get her degree. When I received by first, second, and third master’s, I had the mailman deliver them and that was all. Now my 60th birthday is drawing close. I do not like birthday parties (when directed at me), but the wife has made it clear I am getting one this year. I’ll play, but it is mostly to make her happy. I will admit; however, the day I accepted God into my life was the closest to happy I have even been, but it was still reserved. To be honest with you, the only emotion I have felt in full has been remorse and fear. Wonder what all that means.

Hmm, guess I nee to think about this a while longer.

PS. Just asking for a friend :)

You have 3 Masters?
I doubt you are emotionless. Maybe you are cautious...? Maybe it's profession?? So many things play with us and our emotions.
I have a good friend who is a paralegal. She sounds just like you. She makes me laugh and is so funny yet pretty much an introvert. She can sit in her office and never talk with anyone and shows no emotions. We became great friends and she is freaking hilarious. i love her so much. Different people will often compliment us and bring out things in us. She is quiet and i am very expressive. We get along so well. I learn from her and she learns from me.

My ex-husband worked around everyone you said your life required you to be around. He showed very little joy and literally had no emotions. This is why i said maybe it's your profession.

You can be a quiet person, not want to make any fuss over things, like things simple, etc. and still be a very happy person. Some of the funniest people i know are intellectuals who are quiet introverts. They are literally hilarious people. I am sure there is so much more to who you are.

I find myself agreeing with you a lot.

I worked in retail for many years and Christmas meant working 100 hours a week. As a result I grew to dislike anything to do with Christmas.

Note: see my disclaimer below: am posting as a student, not as teacher: lest I may be found a liar.

More so in the secular world: one need to have a license, needed for a doctor or a psychology.

I just love to read books on it:
Precaution on reading medical books: there is thing called “Medical Student Syndrome” medicine students studying a disease or sickness or what, has this tendency to think they got the symptoms, out of fear? :) Yeah, fascinating how our mind works…

More so in the Christian faith: I believe a license is needed as well for Pastors, Teachers, but regardless, there is an apt verse it think in James 3:1 says:

ESV Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

Murderers, rapist? Oh my, my blood is boiling! More so, reading a Court room details of it?

Precisely why I like Shakespeare: he wrote some novels on anger, jealously, deceit. betrayal: we see a bit of an overview on how human emotions overtook us being human on a rational decision making:

thus: we laugh, we love dramas, actions on TV: it is easier being an observer than the players..

Back to the post: I do agree: I doubt emotionless…

Children are/were FREE to laugh and to cry.. but once we grow up?

but when we became an ADULT: those things we see.

I read somewhere about HIROSHIMA BOMBING AFTERMATH.

It is horrifying to see the dead bodies, dismembered bodies every where… but after a day or two: Human Beings has this adaptability on one’s environment: those people felt NUMB, ADAPTED to it,

In the same manner that I read in the news that 9-11 video of the Trade World is being stopped to be shown repeatedly: there is HUMAN tendency to be numb.

Sorry for this POST if this can TRIGGER emotion: but the GOOD NEWS is, and am looking FORWARD to it, in the Book of Revelations: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21 New International Version (NIV)
A New Heaven and a New Earth
21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

aha, I have to confess; I am not sure I get your response. Can you help a brother out?

Are we talking about desensitization
? If you are, then I agree.

Ah yeah, in short that is what I am trying to say :)

Thanks for that word “desensitization” that is the thing am trying to describe...

Reading my post again, yeah: something is wrong, am confused as well when i read it again :) disclaimer and additional info or footnotes should be at the bottom of the page or post, and not to be used as an opening statement.

As the term seems to be a medical word, and am not a doctor or medicine student, thus a need to post a disclaimer.

It happens to the best of us.... My wife is convinced that I call her "boo" as a term of endearment, but it's cause I sometimes forget her name :)

Sounds like you are in touch with reality.
This journey has many enjoyable moments but we know it is not all it is made up to be.
'Compassion' Real 'Love' is not tied to our human senses. Consider Jesus at the pool of Bethsaida He didn't go in and clean the place out, He only did the Father's will.
Real love is to be led of the Father.
Consider, if your wife encountered some real difficulty would not your heart respond?
I expect the other is just a smoke screen and it is bothering your eyes a bit...

Hello rtm3039;

In my random thought, since I retired from my career end of January 2015, I rarely go to bed early and stay up late to do my church work and will usually sleep in til 9am. I have to confess I "hated" getting up early to go to work. But this was about my inner cup (soul attitude.) It wasn't people. However, God worked through me and realized I was blessed to have a job to wake up to. I still struggled with getting up early but got some perspective.

Jesus said;

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13: 34 – 35 (NIV))

If we look at the first four Commandments, its about our relationship with God. The last six is about our relationship with others. If we struggle with love for one another then we struggle with our love for God, leading to struggle with the 10 Commandments, thus Jesus' teaching of the Great Commandment.

As I read everyone's posts to your thread I noticed their replies, is the reason why Jesus taught this command. People can take all sorts of forms that others will accept or not, agree or disagree, or just not understanding what the other is conveying. This can fester and trigger an emotional feeling that can lead to hate.

A person who is outgoing, a joiner of events may have an issue with someone who is an introvert and keeps to themself. I have experienced this by observing others "whisper" (gossip) that the introvert is a snob, or hard to read, or boring. People can hate just because they are different.

Though God desires us to be of one body, we are still unique individuals created by Him and it takes work to love and accept the other just the way they are.

Personally, I have hated others because I couldn't obey what Jesus taught of the Greatest Commandment. I learned that this command in my life takes work and by God growing me Spiritually began to accept others no matter what they look like, their personality, opinion, what they write or say.

When we see someone's sinful behavior its not the person we hate but the act of sin itself. From Jesus hanging on the cross, reference Luke 23:34.

In my random thoughts I will think of an individual in the past who hurt, betrayed or cursed me, and realized that I did forgive them. I learned that forgiveness took away any bitterness or hate in me and today have peace from that individual.

God bless you all and your families.

My mum calls my sister Loo in chinese which means 'girl' only because she cant really pronounce her english name. She doesnt call me Loo although I am one too, she just calls me by my name. She used to call me bup meaning baby but I protested, and asked to be called by my given name.

Just a random thought!

Enjoy the party...look all your friends are going to be there, there wont be any rapists or murderers just people who want to wish you well. Think of some party games to play..that always makes it more fun. Or have a theme. If you not really one for parties just think its only a couple of hours and then you can celebrate in your own way the next day. Plus you dont need to organise it your wife has offered to. I tell you its not always easy organising events! She does this because she loves you.

GOd wants your joy to be full. He's always inviting us to parties...read the Bible, in revelation theres a huge wedding party, and in the OT God actually mandated feasts to the Israelites that they had to celebrate every year! If they didnt celebrate they actually disappointed God.
Passover, feast of tabernacles, Purim, feast of trumpets, etc.
congrats on reaching 60 its a milestone, and God does teach us to number our days. I dont know if I will live that long! I mean you survived in spite of all the things the enemy has tried to do to destroy you. So give thanks.

I'm not very good at memorizing the exact verses of scripture. On top of that, I'm a terrible speller. Please forgive me in advance. The greatest commandment is to love God with all your heart, mind, and strength and then love your neighbor as yourself. ( Paraphrase)

I agree with you, ive never hated anyone, but i have disliked people, and its simply because of the way they have treated me.
