Wearing cross on your neck

Hello everyone! I'm a new Christian and new to this forum. I have a question to my fellow Christian friends. I made crosses out of polymer clay and have a little dilemma now, so I would like to get to know your opinion. Do you think wearing cross as a jewelry is a form of idolatry, or symbol of your faith? If you think it’s wrong, please speak now, before I start to sell crosses on my Etsy website…

Renata, this is a fantastic question and one that I, unfortunately, am incompetent to answer. There are many wise people in this forum and I am sure you will hear from them soon enough. Your question did cause me to do some research, but I will not regurgitate what others have said. As an aside note, some have made a distinction between a cross and crucifix, which might just be a technicality,

Like you, I too eagerly await comments on your question.

PS. Welcome to the family!

Renata, I take it back. I did come across a comment that I thought was well constructed and worth paraphrasing: In answering the very question you have make, someone wrote that people where a cross for one of three reasons: (1) a reminder to you, (2) as a statement to others, or (3) as a protective charm. In response, the author noted that (1) you should not been a symbol to be reminded, (2) the symbol will not make believers from unbelievers, and (3) Satan is not intimidated by what is around your neck, but is with that is around your heart.

The author really did not answer the question but did provide much to think about. He/she did complete his/her thoughts by noting that “. . . in all these reasons, wearing a cross is unnecessary and in some instances a hindrance to others. It's nice to have a "thing" to wear to show your faith, but it should really be "good deeds" that we put on.”

Not my opinion, this is from the Bible...look up 1 Peter 3:3-4

Personally I dont wear any jewellery. I find its annoying. Even when people give to me I dont wear it. Also its easy to lose! Probably thats why I dont wear it, but just dont like the feeling of having stuff around my neck, unless its a nice warm scarf on a cold day.
It looks nice on others but I dont really put much stock in whether others wear jewellery or not.

Having said that the clay crosses do look nice and maybe they would make a good gift for someone who likes wearing jewellery, but many people that wear crosses may not be aware of how deep faith goes, its not just on the surface. Non believers wear crosses too, and others get tattoos, but God looks on the heart.

As for being a symbol of faith, yes its an important symbol which is why most graveyards have crosses, to signify hope in the resurrection. I notice that people that get cremated do not have such symbols at their resting or burial site, even many do not even get buried at all.

Thank you for your answer! For me personally wearing a cross keeps me more accountable of my words and actions. I'm aware that I'm being watched by people of other faiths and don't want to send a wrong message about being a Christian. It's almost like "don't use God's name in vain". My dilemma is what if the person who bought a cross from me will not act like a Christian. I'm probably overthinking. It's like giving money to the poor and worrying if he spends it on drugs.... I can always pray over every person who will wear my cross :).

Very true. "It depends" appears to be the partial answer to most questions.....

Hello Renata;

I received a cross necklace back in 1995 as a Christmas gift from my wife. It has stayed on my neck for 24 years and have only taken it off 2 or 3 times. I take Jesus serious in my relationship with Him and is deeply embedded in me. Wearing my cross daily, I feel God holds me accountable in my conduct in our home and outdoors.

Praise His Wonderful Name! Thank You For The Cross!

Alas, there will be those who wear the cross necklace as jewelry without a thought about Jesus, but the cross has also brought countless many to our Lord and Savior.

Prayerfully, go and sell your crosses and approach this as your ministry, Renata. God will direct those led on the internet to purchase your beautiful crosses for His purpose.

Meantime, we will pray for God's blessings upon your business.

God bless
you and your family.

Personally, I think it depends on the heart of the person wearing it... the "why" behind it..

For some, it's simply jewelry that may look cool.
To others, maybe a sort of lucky charm.
...and for reasons as others stated above.
and there may be many other varied reasons..

However, it has been my experience that sometimes, that little cross necklace may be noticed by someone who may need to talk to a believer... and that cross necklace will catch their attention... and they may begin to question you about your faith, in a good way... seek advice, ask for prayer, ask you about Jesus... give you an opportunity to share the gospel with them.

It lets others know they can talk to you. It opens the door to conversation about God that may not otherwise happen. It gives them, and you a beginning ice-breaker. I have especially noticed this with my husband. He is an electrician, and works construction jobs, and power plants... and more than once, a simple necklace, hardhat sticker, coffee cup, etc. has been the things that encouraged someone to ask about Christ. So for some instances, it can be a useful tool in prompting conversation / witnessing to others.

So again, I think it all has to do with the reason / motives of the heart of the person who wears it. And even if it is simply jewelry to them, maybe one day, when the Holy Spirit moves them, they may look at that jewelry and see the cross of Jesus.

So, sell you jewelry, and say a prayer for each one you make, and the person who buys it. That it may somehow open a heart to Jesus!

I am in agreement with above post. Wearing cross inherently means nothing. The motives is what matters. Is it to boast about your status as Christian? Or to provide an opportunity to witness to someone else? It is not a lucky charm and not something that keeps devil away (not like you show it on face of devil to make it run away or some tool for exorcism). It is the same as wearing a t-shirt with cross on it.
