Hunting and fishing and gathering

I just want to start a thread on this.
Does anyone hunt or fish for their food? Or go out foraging.

I suppose dumpster diving is probably the only thing you can do in cities, or do you reckon going to the supermarket is now your hunting time.
If you dont grow or farm your own food, how do you get it? Is it easy or hard for you and how often do you go to get it?

Isnt it interesting that Jesus knew just where all the fish were. The disciples who had done it for years sometimes didnt catch anything, amd Jesus said throw your net over the other side and they caught a huge number!

Around my current home, there are two man made lakes (Deep Creek and Broadford) and many streams capable of supporting fish. There are lots of deer this year, they are a hazard to driving as well as damagine plants around the yard, but I don't hunt them although many enjoy the hunt as well as the meat.

As far as I know, around here no-one absolutely depends on fishing or hunting for living but both do supplement the diet and make their grocery bill streatch.

When I lived in Virginia I helped sort food for the hungry at the Fredericksburg food bank. There the Rapahannoc, Potomac, and James rivers provided fishing opportunities of varying value.

We used to gather shellfish at the beach in the summer season but it had got to be overfished and people werent allowd to do it anymore.
I do grow food, veges and herbs but not enough to be fed all the time.

There are now three supermarkets just up the road from me. I live near a creek but we never fished there, the water quality is now very dirty. I think before there were heaps of houses it would have been nice and clean but not so now when the towns just kept being built up.

We have a chicken who lays eggs for us.
Sometimes mum goes to the sunday markets for fresh produce. Its much cheaper and fresher than what you would find at the supermarket, which usually has been stored for months and imported from all over the world. I try to buy locally made food. Although mum, being chinese always has to have rice. Which we dont grow here.

The only hunting people round here might do is for wild pigs or possums. If you want deer, you need to go to the south island.

Ive been learning some to forage for wild food though, and eating weeds and using native plants for medicine. There is still a lot of bush not far from the city where people can go.

As for fish, we dont have a boat but have been fishing a few times off the wharf, some people surfcast. Auckland is an isthmus so has two harbours where people who are keen fishermen know all the best spots. I love seafood.

Mum said I love crayfish so much that I should marry a crayfishman. Well, am still not married as havent met one yet. Maybe thats the way to my heart. If I could have crayfish every week I just might be in heaven. Its now ridicuollously expensive so nobody is game enough lol

Ive never actually eaten deer. I wonder what it tastes like.

Although I haven't eaten deer for several years, I can say it's very salty, even without seasoning, and its "gamey", even if it is properly field-dressed immediately after being shot.

I don´t really care for it, but many around here (western Maryland, USA) look forward to deer season and what they can't eat immediately they freeze.

How do you eat it, in a stew, or roast or what..?

It"s delicious.

I've never experienced deer tasting "salty" unless it was too much seasoning.... Or maybe it wasn't rinsed very well after soaking in icy salt water... ??? Wonder if maybe the meat flavor is due to what they are eating & regional?? As for gamey.. it seems to depend on the circumstances. Sometimes, it's very gamey, (especially if it's an older/mature buck. But usually, if it's a young buck, or a doe... and properly cleaned/soaked/processed.... then it tastes great.

You can cook it all the same ways as you would beef. Soup, stews, jerky, roasted, burgers, steaks, floured & fried.... etc.

To me, the flavor/taste/texture is pretty similar to very tender beef... but kinda different.

Wasnt it esau who bought Isaac venison which was his favourite dish. Are there lots of deer in the middle east?

I found a book on New Zealand fish ID.

Just wondering what the most popular fish (to eat) are in your regions.

For me its these fish - whitebait, hoki, blue cod, snapper, gurnard, flounder, terahki, trevally, salmon, hapuka.

Shellfish - bluff oysters, green lipped mussels, cockles (also called clams), paua (also called abalone)

Crustaceans - rock lobster aka crayfish

We don't eat whales in our country but we do eat squid.

I've just been learning a bit about bush tucker in Australia. One of the foods they hunt for is mud crabs. To catch one, you need a long piece of wire to prod them out of their hidey holes.
We don't have mud crabs in NZ, just paddle crabs, but crabs are one of my favourite foods.

If you've ever tried singapore chili crab it is really delish. God may have not wanted the Israelites to eat crustaceans, but for everyone else, they are a delicious source of food. I think it may have been if the Israelites were allowed to eat them...there might have not been enough for anyone else?!

nevermind, they got Manna and quails instead.

I'm really missing fresh fish atm.

You know the first thing Jesus did after the resurrection...? Went fishing.
