Joshua's Great Stone

Is it still there?
Joshua 24:26-27

How can a stone hear all the words that God spoke to the Israelites? Is the oak still there?
What about all the other stones meant to be memorials in the Bible?

(Mat 3:9) And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

I suppose if they are able to raise up offspring, they should be able to hear.
Oak trees? Seldom live to 500 years.

Lanolin has me on "Ignore" so I replied to your post in hoping she would read this and understand what she asked.

Lanolin.... What you asked is a method of writing which is a writing technique known as "prosopopaie "or more commonly known as personification.

It is very common in the Scriptures. A pile of rocks served as a mute reminder of an important event just as a winner's trophy serves as a reminder of an important event.

In this particular verse, Joshua is pointing out that the stone would be a reminder of what the Israelites had attested to that day. We could think of this as we would for a written statement.

A similar situation happened with Laban and Jacob at Genesis 31:48. In this case, it was a "heap of stones" that was acting as a witness to the covenant between the two men. While this event doesn't mention that the stones were hearing anything, this does show a pattern of people using stones as a sort of documentation of agreements

Hello Major;

I remember studying this method at seminary but it is not limited to just seminary. Every disciple (Christian who follows and is trained in Christ) by studying the Bible can learn this method but it takes discipline of reading and digging deep into it's meaning - context, hermeneutics and exegesis, also methods of gaining knowledge of the Bible as well as applying the application.

Prosopopeia, personification, metaphors and parables are all methods that are learnable by everyone.

The reason it is emphasized in seminary is because these theologians are being trained and equipped for ministry in pastoral care, preaching, teaching, missionary work, etc...for many its a lifetime work for the Lord.

I was never an astute or avid student and struggled by re-reading text or have the math teacher stop, come up to my desk in front of the other students to walk me through the formula in solving a math problem. This was how it was for me to understand my studies while in high school or college.

That is why those who grasp reading and retaining information gets my highest respect to this day.

I hear theologians get knocked for going to seminary, "why should I go to school when the Holy Spirit fills me with the gift of knowledge?" That is commendable, therefore, a spirit of humbleness and humility should be visible, especially toward those who have prayed and committed to study at any school.

We should be happy for them as we are happy for those who are gifted with Biblical knowledge by the Holy Spirit without going to school.

"I hear theologians get knocked for going to seminary, "why should I go to school when the Holy Spirit fills me with the gift of knowledge?"

That is the truth and I heard that all of my life. "Why are you going to Seminary, and then why 2???? "
"If God called you He will equip you"!!!

We who follow Christ have been saved from the eternal consequences of our sinful actions, but the act of accepting Jesus did not transform my brain into a Biblical education course so that I immediately knew the doctrines of God.

That kind of thinking would logically then apply to a Brain surgeon. I like cutting people. The Holy Spirit will guide my hand so I do not need to know anything else.

Is there anyone who goes to that kind of Doctor???

I have watched my neighbor work on his car and I am filled with the Holy Ghost. Do you want to rebuild the engine in your BMW for you this weekend????? That is the same logic!

The reason I think that there are so many FALSE teachings and wrong ideas is that way too many people believe that because they are saved, all of a sudden they are now experts on Christian theology and become pastors and then lead lots of people down the path of deception and heresy.

If anyone does not believe that.........go back and read through the posts on any Christian forum and see the gooffy, non-Biblical comments of doctrines.

Of course, then again, not just any seminary will be beneficial.

I was referring to the stone not seminary, not sure how this conversation turns to seminaries....nothing to do with the topic.

As far as I know, it was just one big stone. A GREAT stone as it says in KJV.
Apparently the 12 memorial stones left by the Red sea are still there.
As is the anchor stone of Noah's ark
And anchor stones found of Paul's shipwreck.
I've also seen pictures of the rock that gushed water that Moses tapped.

On Mt Moriah supposedly is the 'Dome of the Rock' which was where Isaac was nearly sacrificed.
There's also that white stone with a name on it that Jesus promised to give some in the church.

Hello brother;

Thank you for your reply and that was exactly my point. At the same time if someone is blessed with grasping the challenges of Scripture, no matter how they attain learning, then we should be happy for them.

God bless you, Major.

there is nothing wrong with education at a seminary . i did not have that chance plus in todays world it takes lots $$$$$.. mine was not so much $$ but i had work to support the family. i understand the rocks .i have heard very educated preachers to be honest i found some boring. i enjoy listening to someone with a good education . who takes it and places to a level i understand i love listening to dr. McGee AND ADRIAN ROGERS . the turn off is how a person uses it.

Now does anyone know if that great stone is till there, or are people going to fuss about seminaries in this thread.
Cos I can always start another thread if you want to talk about that.

Jesus said the stones are able to cry out too. Luke 19:40

Olive trees can live for thousands of years. I am not sure oaks were around the middle east at that time. They seem more of an English/temperate tree.

its symbolical in nature
Like headstones or gravestones as a memorial.
But the question isn't really that. Its IS IT STILL THERE?

We always wonder what purpose places like Stonehenge or the Easter Island statues were meant for. People had been there before but why did they erect these huge stones. When you go to a graveyard, there are stone markers for graves. Otherwise how would anyone ever know someone was buried there.

Obelisks and cairns serve the same purpose. But in the Bible it seems God directed Joshua to place a memorial stone. And it was an ACTUAL stone, not a symbol of one.

i was reference to stones cry out. verse 9 9 Joshua also set up 12 stones in the middle[d] of the Jordan where the priests[e] who carried the ark of the covenant were standing. The stones are there to this day.

what does the word say ? it would be hard to know or prove but the stones are as a memorial thus there still there
