Why Is There So Much Promiscuity In Pentecostalism?

Over the years we have witnessed a revolving door of rampant sexual and financial scandals.

Now some will say that these events are not just experienced in the Pentecostal denomination but are seen in all other denominations including the Catholic Church. That may be true and anyone is welcome to post their own facts or disagree in their own thread. I am just posting what I have observed.
I thought then that I would give my thoughts on WHY we see this over and over.

#1. Endemic to Pentecostalism is a profoundly anti-intellectual ethos. For others who are from Alabama as I am, "ethos" is a word used today to refer to the practices or values that distinguish one person, organization, or society from others.

That being the case, the "ethos" of the Pentecostal denomination is manifested in a deep suspicion of scholars and educators and especially biblical scholars and theologians in the Pentecostal denomination. In those circles, the "anointing" is all that is needed to preach.
In plain English, the thought here is that those people who are educated are of no earthly good to the movement. WHY??? Because those people question what is actually taught from the Bible which eventually denounces the false teachings of the denomination.

#2. Deeply embedded within the Pentecostal movement’s ethos is a cult of personality; charismatic leaders are put on pedestals above accountability and are often virtually worshiped by many of their followers.

There are very few courses in basic ethics which are required in Pentecostal colleges. That is because many Pentecostals, especially older ones, assume that those who have the anointing are Holy Spirit-filled which guarantees the right behavior.
A simple search and a little homework and you will find out that too many pastors, and or their family handle the churches’ money and travel alone without having to account for their whereabouts or activities.

It’s the movement’s own dirty little secret: This kind of attitude speaks directly to mans "sin nature" and results in sexual promiscuity and financial misconduct and little is done about this unless a scandal becomes public and they are forced to deal with it. When it becomes public, then it is too late to fix.

#3. Still another aspect of Pentecostalism’s dark side is its tendency to condone dishonesty on the part of influential and popular evangelists and ministers.
That leads to very questionable claims and miraculous statements which are accepted by the members because of #2 above.

Playing fast and loose with the truth is rampant in Pentecostal circles, and is excused and even joked about as “speaking evangelistically.”

Andrew Womack
claimed .....“My son died in 2001, on March 4, and he was dead for between four and five hours,” Wommack says. “And he was in a hospital; they had stripped him naked, put a toe tag on him, put him in the morgue on a slab. And then they called me to tell me what happened.”

Mark Crowder claimed.............He knew about a woman in a Pentecostal church that had a leg actually grow back.
After some rigorous questioning, he stated that her leg was missing from birth and grew back after she had received prayer.

Now.....this is not said to question the worship practices of the Pentecostals. Without question they have many spirit filled preachers who I like to listen to.
They have really good music which moves the soul. Personally I believe that they all by themselves revived the practice of raising hands during worship and added excitement to the dull worship services that we all to often see.

Not to point out the sins of others, as Lord knows ALL of us are far from being a finished saint, but Jimmy Swaggert shows to us a perfect example of how one can be "fired up" for the Lord on Sunday preaching, and yet give into fleshly desires during the week. The AOG at least had provisions for their ministers caught in such a situation, as would be down from pulpit 12 month, and engage in therapy 24 months before coming back, but he decided to become independent to avoid that down time.

Think simple answer to why those groups seem to have such rotten fruit would be due to having very bad theology regarding the Holy Spirit working in us, and also being in an environment that seems to condone just as long as one can be a dynamic Sunday speaker, and have the "anointing" basically falls under "touch not the Lord anointed"

As we see them tolerate many bad theology and even heresies in WOF churches

Good morning, Major and YeshuaFan;

The founder of a major Pentecostal Church was exposed for scandals such as financial abuse of tithe monies, "alleged" adulterous affairs while leading their major congregations around the United States. They launched a new Church in 2024. The founder along with his wife made this announcement while posing for a media photo as if everything was alright, "with no fear."

In the last 3 years many of their "satellite" Churches closed down and about 5 remain in the United States under new name and leadership. Their songs were world known for praise and worship in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Church I served while in the music ministry added these songs to our set each week. Since 2022 we were led to discontinue using these songs.

What saddens me is when a prominent Church leader (even world leaders) are obviously exposed for their sin, world laws allow them to retreat and receive protection
(hide behind.)

The world stage watches our Christian Churches and unfortunately have sent the wrong message to those who wonder if one would want to become a Christian by what they witness. In the meantime God watches and cannot be fooled.

Galatians 6:7-10, 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. - NIV

There are 5 Churches we attended while being grounded for ministry and pastoring 4 others, we didn't have a large pocket of money, my Church salary indicated I would not get rich and my life commitment "going to bed and touching" only my wife of 40 years, truth be told, God blessed us abundantly and has faithfully been there to guide us through the most extreme suffering.

Praying daily to seek truthful teachings of the Word of God, choosing to follow Him, and seeking Him to guard our hearts and tongues may not be attractive to the world, but the reward for obedience is definitely there.

Galatians 6:9-10, 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. - NIV

In the meantime as much as I don't want to, I pray for these nuckleheads who have misled the world because of their practices and behaviors with the hope that a circumstance will get their attention with Christ and hopefully set them in the right path as they continue to lead their Church.

God bless you both and thank you for sharing

Supreme Irony is that they all promote the so called "second blessing of grace, Baptism in the Holy Ghost", and yet those same leaders keep on going into affairs, money grabs etc, is the primary aspect of the HOLY Spirit be that he is indeed HOLY, and those using His name should be found also that wasy?

Great point, as many of their leaders and so called prophets and apostles indeed are treated as if were Elvis and or the Apostles peter Paul and John
So who, really, is to blame? The congregation is looking for a savior. They anoint the preacher. What else do they expect will happen?

No one wants to be told harsh, cold truth. It's the way of people. We want a warrior to lead us to victory, not a lamb to console us in slaughter.

God places much more blame on the false shepherds than the sheep being led astray

Agreed, and If I hear the words "Gods anointed" one more time, I am going to leave my diaper on all day!

Somehow, we have allowed those words to overshadow all ignorance, faults, and problems and yes, sin.

You are 100% correct my brother. We....people in general today do not want truth! We want someone to tell us smooth things, lies so that we can fell good about ourselves.

Isaiah 30:8-10......
"And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever. For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord; who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions".

There is NO difference in the people of Isaiah's day and today.

I do hope that all reading this thread will Please understand that what I have to say is not meant as an attack on people. That is not my intent.

All I do these days is to point out the lies and heresies and inconsistences of men who call themselves Bible Christians .
I point out their False doctrines as I believe the Bible calls on us to always expose those theologies that God condemns.
We must be willing to earnestly contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3).

If I was to say today that there were no miracles, no power, no gifts, no healings, nothing but the theatrical antics and delusions of men, and what was claimed for the great power of God was nothing more than musical hype and psychologically induced emotionalism.........
I would have a dozen people go on the attack and question my Christianity and my faith.

When I say "Miracle", I am referring to the unexplainable things that only God can do. Creation, parting the Red Sea, crossing the Jordon on dry ground.

Power??? The church has NO power! The church stopped calling sin---sin a long time ago and what happened was abortion was made legal, reading the Bible and prayer in schools was banned and homosexual marriage were legalized. Power?????

Physical healings??? The Pentecostals have claimed healing after healing and even seen the dead rise. However, when pressed for proof or evidence......there is NONE!

An HBO special documented the well known faith healer, BennyHinn’s crusade in Portland, Oregon. On stage Hinn performed 76 alleged miracles. The documentary’s producers asked the ministry for the names of the healed. Thirteen weeks later, only 5 answers were received. Upon investigation of those five, none had received an actual healing. One of those was 10 year-old Ashmil Prakash who had been stricken with two brain tumors. Despite the “healing” pronounced by Hinn and the pledge made by his impoverished parents to give thousands of dollars to Hinn’s ministry, the child died seven weeks after the crusade.

Pentecostalism from its founding in 1907 until today serves as a good lesson for Bible students. The entire movement and its distinctives are the result of bad exegesis.

I was once a Teaching Elder in the Assemblies of God, so know their Theology, and would say while have improper understanding of the Person and work of the Holy Spirit, they would just be wrongs, its the Charasmatics and word of Faith, modern day apostles and prophets group that are into full blown heresy

Their are still some legit teachers and pastors in the "old Pentacostals" such as Gordon Fee and Stanley Horton, but much of current day charasmatic Chaos such as wof and properity is heresy being given a platform

I have known people that I consider Holy. They each, without exception, place others first and themselves last. I give them money, beg them to take it, and as often as not they turn around and give it away to someone even needier.

It is only my "opinion" but it seems to me that one major criticism often directed at Pentecostal churches is their perceived emphasis on emotionalism and sensationalism in worship services. Bigger is better no matter what the cost is to doctrine.

From what I have "observed" it seems that the focus on speaking in tongues, healing services, and gaining wealth has detracted from the true message of the Gospel.

While that is absolutely the case, and what that leads to is "Continuationism".

This is the position that holds that the Holy Spirit continues to give to the church all the spiritual gifts listed in the New Testament as charismata, including the so-called “sign” or “miraculous” gifts: word of knowledge, word of wisdom, prophecy, miracles, healings, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

They want to make ones experience with the Lord to be more personal, to be more emotional, especially in praise and worship, but biggest problem is that they are wide open to false teachers and pastors, as they hold to the Holy Spirit still gives forth revelation even today, hence modern day prophets and apostles. And the really err when they see Acts as not a historical record of the transition from old to new, but see it as describing what every NT church should be experiencing and doing now

What is irony is that they claim one MUST speak forth in other tongues to have second act of Grace'Baptism in Holy Ghost", yet bible states that even gift of tongues given to us as the Spirit Himself desires, so even if one held to tongues for today, not all would even have them

What is irony is that when I was a teenager, i was told by the Pastor then that the church had "training classes to learn how to speak in tongues."

I never forgot that. Why would you need a training class to learn what was a so called "Gift"?
