Isaac's Blessing

Why was Isaac's blessing to Jacob irrevocable? Jacob clearly defrauded Esau. By any legal standard the blessing would be void, but all parties involved, including Isaac, view it as fully permanent.

How? Why?

At this point of my life, there is nothing I enjoy more than responding to Bible questions.

To answer your question here, IMHO.....
Jacob’s blessing remained valid not because of his deceit but because God had ordained him as the covenant heir.

So then, the permanence of Isaac’s blessing serves as a reminder of the reliability of God’s promises. Once God has spoken, His word stands firm and never changes. Human weakness, deception, or opposition cannot overturn what God has determined.

Isaac could not revoke his blessing because patriarchal blessings in Scripture function as prophetic confirmations of God’s will, not changeable human wishes. Even though Jacob obtained it deceitfully, God ensured that His covenant purpose was fulfilled. The incident highlights both the seriousness of God-ordained blessings and the certainty that His promises cannot be undone.

I hope this helps and thanks for asking.

This is what I wanted to talk about. Such ideas as irrevocable blessing are foreign to our modern, legally minded way of thinking. Today Esau would claim fraud and Jacob would be punished, end of story. But back then things were different.

The world may change, and all within it may fade, but the truths revealed in God’s Word remain constant. As we stand on God’s Word, we anchor ourselves to something unchanging and eternally reliable, a source of stability amid the ever-fluctuating conditions of life.

Any promise that God made He kept or it has not yet come to pass.

Agreed, but Esau was the elder. Isaac thought he was blessing Esau. Isaac thought God's blessing was falling on Esau.

After the fact we can piece together that God's blessing was meant for Jacob, but how would Isaac know that? To him it would have seemed evil what Jacob did. Indeed, Esau sought to kill his brother after this.

Jacob paid a dear price for his deceit. He himself was a victim of deceit at the hands of his father-in-law.
