The Bibles to avoid like the Black plague would be the JW NWT, Mormon Smith inspired revrevised Kjv, and the Clear bible of the Sda, all 3 of those reflected the heresy of the cults right in their so called bible translations
Anyone buy a Bible after learning the notes were in error and pitch it?

Exactly! There’s simply was no other choice. And of course, there were numerous editions of the TR and none of those were exactly alike. Translators had to pick and choose among the various editions which reading to follow.
YF you may be surprised I pitched a KJV because of its notes from a famous female that I discovered was not reliable. She is noted for her female evangelical teaching studies aimed at women. It even had an expert she hired to translate Hebrew and Greek.
Good thing my neighbor who helped me with my repentance born from above experience had already rejected the women study she sat through before me of this commercially produced ministry.
I do believe in the long run The Holy Spirit will not be quenched by those who seek to pervert the Holy Writ.
Our Pastor has an unique word “ appointment .”
I have had appointments where indeed The Holy Spirit has steered me obviously to the right people and the right in the Truth of THE WORD when it was called for in my FAITH journey ongoing.
Another WORD that speaks mightily to me is “ Perseverance. “
And in order to be a KJVO one would have to grant that the Holy Spirit Himself inspired their textual decisions each and every time directly

I'm definitely not a Hebrew Roots person.
Many translations boil down to two things.
You either go for the fewer, yet older manuscripts, OR
You go for the majority (manuscripts), yet younger (but with a greater attestation).
I happen to favor the latter.
But like they say, 'the best Bible is the one you read'.
Yes, and after studying the manuscripts, many opt for the Textus Receptus.
I read off and on for years a snippet here and there of mostly KJV.
A full cover-to-cover study? To my shame not.
But say I knew Jesus? Not. I used His Name in vain calling myself a Christian.
The best Bible is the one you understand and follow the Two Greatest Commandments as closely as we are able as we mature in our walk with Him.
Fortunately our Lord and Savior taught in The Way a child of GOD may understand.
May we all learn to eat The Word and savor it with the love of The Author and Finisher of our FAITH as He intended before we were conceived.

I believe that,I'm just not into the Sinaiticus or Vaticanus mss. (those two.. upon which most modern translations are based).

I really like the Amplified! Great blend of ole English then extends into modern English. Lots and lots of cross references. It would take a very long time to do a cover to cover for sure. Sounds like you did well to me sir!
I do Berean method study of verses from daily selections from admired sources. I share with my intimate friends and blood family.
Take a verse, put it context of chapter, run all the cross references, use at least one Bible Commentary, then use Strong’s for original language lexicon.
The Bible tastes delicious!
Singing in my ear all night keeps me at peace with the blessed voices praising His Name. Somehow I still awake. My heart He has chosen to keep beating.
I slip out of bed with a Hallelujah Amen!
Time to take Miss Wags Mabel outside as the coffee brews.
Read Scripture rinse and repeat.
