2 Samuel 1:17-18 King James Version (KJV)
17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

2 Samuel 1:17-18

BBE17Then David made this song of grief for Saul and Jonathan, his son:18It is recorded in the book of Jashar for teaching to the sons of Judahand he said:

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

17 Mourning was a period of time where they did not do much of anything, they often times did not even eat during times of mourning the time frame of how long the mourning lasted was dependent on how close they were to those that passed. David mourning for Saul showed who David was because Saul hated David but David cared for Saul and of course we know David cared for Jonathan they were close friends.

18 David knew how to write and play music so he wrote this song for the remembrance of Saul and Jonathan. The Book of Jasher was man’s account of Jewish early history from times around Moses to the start of David’s reign but God’s account for us is not in the book of Jasher but in the bible itself. History was often times recorded down but while the bible is accurate history it is not the purpose for God giving it to us.

2 Samuel 1:17-18
'And David lamented
with this lamentation over Saul
and over Jonathan his son:
(Also he bade them
teach the children of Judah
the use of the bow:
behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)'

Hello Clark,
It seems that the name Jasher means 'The Upright One', and '
the bow' is the subject of the Lamentation, so that the word 'lamentation' should have been repeated, instead of the words, 'the use of', so that it said, 'teach the children of Judah the lamentation of the bow':-

'From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.'

(2 Sam. 1:22)

It was this lamentation which was to be taught to the children of Judah. (see 1 Chronicles 8:40; 1 Chronicles 12:2; and 2 Chronicles 14:8; and 17:17). The tribe of Saul and Jonathan was noted for it's use of the bow - the tribe of Benjamin.

In Christ Jesus
Chris
