Anthropology is divided between two major viewpoints.
One: humanistic and atheist. Religion is evolutionary and is a social construct arising out of observation and awe of nature and the world; along with ignorance of scientific knowledge.
Two: Biblical. Humans originally knew of the Supreme Creator and the creation, but over the last 40,000 years have lost this knowledge; and have been exposed to the teachings of Satan and false religion.
Hence the devolution of truth into creation myths and stories by hunter gather societies.
