I raised my children not to be commercial on holidays. I did not celebrate Halloween for many years. This resulted in both my daughters celebrating every American holiday to the extreme. Birthdays are not simply a cake and one gift, but have turned into birthday months. Christmas is not a small tree and a few gifts, but an explosion of even back yard décor. Our front yard for Halloween this year has a cemetery, a skeleton couple with their skeleton dog sunbathing and fishing, a host of inflatables, lights, and a complete scene from "Dexter" in the process.
Many Americans are out of control with commercial holiday celebrations. We don't need to celebrate every. single. one.
