Dealing with narcissists

Now my opinion is......we all know people like who we are talking about. When we speak of this disorder, it has to be out of love and concern or there will be toxic repercution.
I agree.... but I am also being brutally honest... I lack SEVERE empathy for the topic of narcissism. Arrogance is something that just seems to be the thorn in my side.

I think this is a topic that is most prevalent in this society at this time. The world is filled with those who think too well of themselves. People who will step on and over others to get what they desire. The fall-out from this is brutal. So... this is a real problem.

Perhaps we need to split this topic in two categories... How to deal with Christians who are narcissistic and non Christians who are narcissistic.
I have encountered people in both of those categories.

I really lack a proper answer here. I tend to absolutely ignore and shun ( for lack of a better word ). I will not give them a platform.
I guess I have decided that this is a worse sin... or maybe I just have not learned to show mercy... tolerance and grace.

This is one topic I have NIL tolerance for.

With the above said... this is not an area I even have to deal with so... my thoughts are not necessarily correct.

IAoH, yes. Most people should avoid those who are programmed with narcissism. Most people are unprepared. My general approach to them is to simply ask pointed questions, and they sometimes are adept at sidestepping, but most of the time they paint themselves into a corner, and THAT'S when they get defensive and lash out at the one they perceive as their assailant, even though all that was launched at them were questions about the voracity of their beliefs.

Our pubic schools are indeed doing a cheeky job at creating a generation of narcissists.

Isn't there a bit of narcissism in each of us, just as there is a bit of phariseeism as well?
I spoke to a Christian counsellor about narcs, and we agree that we've all got these tendencies.
She did say that some are off the scale though. the practical points above relate to those types, and theyre also good tips for self defence.
Secular psychology says that narcs are beyond hope, but we know different.

It's just wearing :(

I'd say that it would be unremarkable that there are counselors out there who would demand, based on the text of the Bible, that even Jesus had varying degrees of narcissism. After all, He drove out the money changers and the sellers of over-priced animals for sacrifices to those who didn't have herds and flocks from which to pick for their sin sacrifices, and lashing out at those Pharisees and Sadducees, calling them names and such... On the other hand, Diotrephes would have escaped that analysis by the same types of counselors...

Narcissism is not always easy to diagnose and recognize. What is easy to recognize is sin, from which narcissism arises. Sin is sin, and manipulators are plentiful out there. They ALL are the reason we must wear the full armor of God, because our enemies are not only spiritual beings, but also those who are under their influences.

Good stuff.

Wasn't this part of Oprah Winfrey's rejection of the God of the Bible? "He is a jealous God, who demands worship".
Duhh, (speaking of narcissism)

YES.... I now understand what you were saying. I think what I do with these people is more along the lines of dismissal and shunning... as in I simply walk away and don't allow them to play with me. I think I may also be getting terms mixed up because narcissism is a specific condition... and I am including simple arrogance and entitlement.

Anyways... my Christianity DOES NOT shine in this topic so I regress... I should perhaps now remain SILENT... and plead the fifth. HA
Or........you can continue to share your thoughts with us!

Agreed. The "lashing" out is a defensive move to take the focus off of themselves (At least thatt is what my wife just told me).

It's the old.....Yea, I may be arumentitive but YOU are really ugly!

Playing the victim is an unhealthy trait for people with character disorders. Trouble is, people don’t always know who the real victim is because most character disordered folk are so good at blaming others that others can sometimes start to side with them and actually start to believe their narrative.

I look at someone’s actions and fruit in their lives before I befriend anyone closely. That goes for online too.

Hello Via;

Yes to what you mentioned about online. What we read can be taken in so many ways. As I've shared before, nothing beats "live testimony."

God bless you, sister.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this, and I think with this generations individualistic culture of 'me first' and selfishness its very hard to break out of that mindset because schools and secular society always say to put yourself first, because without God our Father nobody is really looking after them and people tend to want to be masters of their own fates.

I've had to come to terms with it in my own family and it's been hard. Books try and help with the advice of 'going no contact'. I think there's something in breaking soul-ties or being connected backward to a narcissist. It doesn't seem to be a mental disorder but more a personality disorder. Often we just don't realise what it is we are dealing with until we are quite deep into it. I understand about being a magnet because the narcissist needs a constant supply.

The thing is we do need to die to ourselves and live for Christ.

Phillipians 2:6 may help.
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

Jesus took himself to be a servant even though he was born to be a King. He made himself poor so we could be rich.

I don't have many other tips to share other than its something that needs a lot of prayer! People say binding and loosing prayers can help.

Probably true.

It seems to me that we all suffer from one kind of character flaw or another in life. What we should do and work to do is to live in the middle. The problem however is that IF we could we would!

Reminds me of Romanns 7:15..........
" For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I".

Yes, I do know that the context of that verse is Paul dealing with sin and not character flaws, however it can be applied to the later as well as the former. Again, when character flaws are identified as mental failures we can see that those actions are herder to control so that we can live in the middle. At times they require medical support.

Not being an expert, but being married to one, medication seems to be impossible to help a Narcissist to live in the middle.
My wife tells me that there is no NPD medication approved by the FDA specifically for the treatment of Narcissist personality disorder, however, certain types of medications are known to help deal with some of the narcissistic personality disorder symptoms that come from this disorder such as "anger, anxiety, and dramatic mood swings."

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by personality traits like a distinct lack of empathy or compassion for others along with feelings of arrogance and entitlement.

Extremes either right or left swings causes hardships on our families. That IMHO applies to all of life.

Extreme actions left or right are dangerous. Allow me to illustrate..............

Extreme Far left..........................................................Middle of life..............................................................................Extreme far right
(No death penalty for murder) Each incident must be determined by severity) Death penality for any death, no exceptions

Now if there is NO death penalty at all, what deterrent would there be for any person to not kill your child today and YOU tomorrow?
Consider the situation in New York and LA and Chicago today. NO deterrent leads to EXTREME repercussions.

If on the other hand society applies the death penalty to every death, then how do we live with killing a man who wreaks his car and kills someone in the accident?

You see......extremes on either side of life have severe ramifications which is why we need to strive to live in the middle!

Well.... SHOCK of all shocks... HAHA.... I came into this conversation with both fists swinging and you Sir... have challenged me to see things through a lens of greater mercy and compassion.

The fact that we ALL suffer from some sort of proclivity ( a thorn in our sides if you will )... has made me to understand that perhaps this narcissism thing is indeed a true psychiatric disorder rather than just a social teaching.

I know for myself... I was what they call medication resistant... I went on tons of meds for depression over the years and NOTHING touched it... perhaps it was due to my dual diagnosis of dysthymia ( which is a low grade depressive state that never goes away ). So... when I would suffer with seasonal bouts of severe depression... this was when I was in a very dangerous state.

I am so blessed to have received healing. I am grateful that this topic was brought up.
My point of view has changed. So... for anyone reading this thread... a good healthy debate/topic entered with a mind to listen... sometimes causes a change of heart. HA.

turning inward to self, is most likely satan's biggest weapon...

Genesis 3:4-5 LSB
And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! [5] For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
