John 12:5-6 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.
Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany
Even though Judas spoke truth about the poor, his heart was far from it. I think what this passage is saying is that we have to be true to ourselves if we are to follow Jesus. Our hearts reflect what we say, through body language and can be caught in deceit. Sometimes I say things that don't mean anything to me just to look "better" than someone else. I guess the other word for that is being too righteous. I don't know where the attitude came from, but I've started to become the very thing I disliked. I'm no thief like Judas was, but I'm a thief of what makes me - me; a robber of my Christian ethics. If that makes sense.
I have repented to God about this and asked for his guidance for my heart, mind and soul.
John 12:25-26 Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
Some Greeks Seek Jesus
In verse 25 it seems like a lose-lose situation. You can love or hate your life, either way, it will be lost or gained in a negative way. In a way, this verse could be used to help with depression along with verse 26 of course, but that could be just me. There is always room for salvation.
John 12:37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him...
The Unbelief of the People
It still applies today from possession. Even though they saw the power of God to drive out demons, some still refuse to believe. I still can't fathom why that is. Even though this passage is speaking about a prophecy, it's still very much true today.
