How can I know if God may be disciplining me?

Conviction of your heart towards something.
Praying and seeking Him and find out.
He won't hide what He wants to deal with.

From what I see, God does not punish in the sense of purposefully causing harm. He may try to redirect you to a different path. The means He employs may seem harsh, but will be understood as an expression of Love if you look back after we are in His Kingdom.
If there is some sin for which you haven't confessed and accepted forgiveness, He may make things very uncomfortable until this is resolved. This is also an act of love.

Discipline is not always about a punishment.
Sometimes Discipline is showing you a principled way, you may not have known or considered.
Listen to your heart over your mind.
