False Teachers And Their Destruction

Today I was reminded of this passage found in 2 Peter 2:1-22 (NIV)

2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them —bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh[c] and despise authority.

Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; 11 yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from[d] the Lord. 12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish.

13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.[e] 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed —an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer,[f] who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,”[g] and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”

These scriptures are very relevant for today. "people are slaves to whatever has mastered them". I know many people who are enslaved to all sorts of things and yet they sometimes preach as if they are sinless. I thank God for His grace and the power He has over the things that try and enslave me. I have been convicted so harshly in the past that sometimes I could not sleep, I felt physically weak and exceptionally stressed. Only confession and repentance brought me peace. I thank God for His Holy Spirit who convicts and brings council. For a Christian to ignore the conviction of the Holy Spirit is utter foolishness and will lead to destruction.

Before Christ I was ignorant, after recieving Him I was convicted to freedom. Thank you Jesus

I thought so, too. They are relevant on so many levels. I praise God for His Holy Spirit who reveals the Truth to all who earnestly seek HIM. May we all receive His grace and wisdom to be able to heed and guard our hearts against the thief who relishes the division of His Body.

Correctly said.

The theme of 2 Peter 2 is about apostasy bought in by false teachers.

We do not have to look any further than this web site to see that taking place. There have been and still are people who do nothing but expound on WHAT they want the Scriptures to say......NOT WHAT THE SCRIPTURES ACTUALLY DO SAY. That kind of thinking is either coming from a "cultish" atttitude or will lead to a "cultish attitude".

Now.......false teachers have SOME true doctrine. There is not a cult that I know of which does not have "some" truth in it. That is the one thing that makes them dangereous. These false teachers generally believe that some things are true.

Our Lord said in Matthew 7:15........
"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly they are revening wolves".

Paul warned us as well in Acts 20:29......
"For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock".

May I say to you all..........."leaven" (sin) has gotten into the bread today!!!!
The bread is the Word of God and there is a lot of false teachers that go out under the guise of being the one who is giving the Word of God.

What does that mean??? FALSE followers will go after FALSE teachers. I am one who does not believe that God's elect can be permanetly deceived. I believe that God permits a lot of the cults and "isms" we see today in order to draw away from the true church that which is false, because those who are "phony or make-believers" will go after that sort of thing.

1 Corth. 11:19 seems to be saying just that to me............
"For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you".

Now, allow me to share a burden of my heart. It has bothered me for a long long time and you may not agree and that is fine because it is a personal thing to me. We have so many PLASTIC preachers today that can be molded and shaped by their congregation. They tend to say what their congregation wants to hear. They use plastic words and bandaids instead of the Word of God which cuts like a two edged sword.

Peter, in the text that was used here by "cover_by_grace", tells us that false teachers will speak with feigned words, plastic words, words that are molded. They will fit their words to the people to whom they are speaking. They say one thing to one crowd and something else to another crowd.

What then is the motivation for false teachers????? Simon Peter puts is right out there in the open for us to see in
2 Peter 2:3......
"And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you; whose judgment now of a
long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not".

They do it because they are COVETOUS!! Covetousness is actually a form of IDOLATRY.
Sometimes it may be that they are covetous for a position, or for a name of recognition. or for popularity and most often is is a way to obtain more money.

So very true, Major! False teachers always use a portion of the truth. That's a hallmark of the deceiver (satan). It is recorded in the gospels where he used a portion of the truth each time he attempted to tempt Christ. But, Jesus knowing the whole scripture (because HE WAS (IS) THE SCRIPTURE incarnate!! Hallelujah!) wouldn't allow it, instead, drawing satan back to the Truth each and every time, which he (satan) already knew! PTL :D

Truthfully, that's all we can do this day, too. Jesus set a perfect example. Besides praying, refuting lies with the whole truth is all we should do because the Truth speaks for itself. Praise God for His Holy Spirit who brings to life the words on the page and rescues our soul from the one who would rather see us live in agony and perish eternally. Our Savior did not leave us without the Comforter....and, man, am I glad about THAT!! :)
