Fountain Pens

Anyone use/collect/enjoy fountain pens? I've collected them for ten years or so. I also enjoy dip pens.

Last Christmas my wife bought me a Pilot e95s with 14kt gold fine nib with black resin body. It's my fanciest pen. Been using it with a sampling of dark blue/purple/black ink.

I hate to say this, but my actual writing is pretty much limited to signing my name. Schools no longer teach cursive writing, and when we ask students to sign documents, most can only use block letters.

When I was a kid, I enjoyed writing in cursive just for the fun of it. I would re-invent my signature on the regular.

You can find books on Spencerian penmanship or perhaps the Palmer Method for handwriting. I bought a Spencerian workbook a few years back and it really helped.

I was so saddened to hear that the schools no longer teach cursive writing. OH my goodness... I remember being little and the BIG thing was after learning to PRINT.... we got to learn to WRITE. Remember the note books with those dotted lines in between to help with proper form.

I still send the occasional hand written letter... but I must confess... I now mostly type everything and send an email. I have gotten a bit shaky with my writing these last few years.

I spent some time trying to find the perfect pen... I never did lavish myself with the proper attempt to find one. I do think like you that I would love the dipped pen... I have never owned an expensive one... but I have experienced the dipping of a nib in raw ink.

WOW.... I think I might try and get re-aquainted with the art of writing.

I will have to look up Spencerian penmanship... Never heard of it or the Palmer method.... so I will do that.

Once again, LearningToLetGo brings up an interesting topic. 👍

I have a few pens next to my desk. One of them is a fountain pen called Waterman made in France. It's been many years since I used it.

When I worked in the accounting field my main pen was A.T. Cross. I used blue ink in my work and for awhile my fountain pen which my managers would use to sign off on documents, invoices, etc...It made for an interesting conversation.

Today my budget cannot afford both pens so I use a 3 pak of blue ink pens called Energel from Office Depot.

Thats a nice fountain pen, Jason. Are both fountain pens?

I just remembered that my Dad gave me my fountain pen as a graduation present from college and have kept it all these years. My pen doesn't dip into a nib but comes (or purchase extra) with it's own ink cartridges that insert at the end of the pen.

Hello Ray;

These gel ink pens are also nice. I use the blue needle tip or ball roller type. I take care of my pens and they last long as long as I don't misplace or break them (leaking.)
I go through a good number of pens a year. Don't write letters with them but am known for taking a great deal of notes at meeting and I have at least one meeting five days a week.

I collect all kinds of pens and stationary. There's no way I'll ever use them all since my stash grows faster than it shrinks. I picked up some Pilot Acroball 1000 gel pens at Fred Meyer a few weeks ago. They're nice pens and fit well in the hand.

I like the color of both pens. Is the dark pen a dark blue?

When my sister lived in Kent, WA, we enjoyed shopping at Fred Meyers. Back in 1996 a group of young adult Christians came down from WA to visit our Church and their leader was an executive at FM.

The rose gold is metal and the blue is actually translucent celluloid. It appears opaque until you hold it up to light.

This reminds me I need to pick up ink refills when I go to Chinatown at the end of the month. There's a Japanese stationary store with every kind of pen or paper that you never knew you wanted there.

Block letter signatures are a forger's dream. You don't need to know cursive to develop a unique signature. A signature is not supposed to be a simple writing of one's name. It's supposed to be a distinguishing mark that is never the exact same every time it's written (although it always bears some repetitive elements).

It's funny you mention that. I like signing my name and admit that it comes in various versions. As a director, I sign all leave requests. Every two weeks, we do payroll. We do a double check process, meaning that the paperwork is first reviewed by someone in the audit department and then it comes to me for a second check and the signing of the payroll certification document. I have lost count of how often I am called down to audit to confirm my signature, as it always looks different.

I'm SOOOOOOOOO jealous. You guys got me to deciding... I need to buy myself a GOOD pen and start writing again.... which leads me to my brief journey of trying to find the PERFECT pen ( which I never did ). I have gotten out of practice as ... I rely on a keyboard now. It is so much faster because I am a good typer. Since I own a family of snails... I guess it stands to reason that I would get back into snail mail. HAHA.

To be honest.... I think I prefer the flow of a fountain pen that has the pre-loaded cartridges. I guess it's just cleaner.
I bought a calligraphy set a few years back with different shaped nibs and a plethora of different coloured inks.

SIGH!!!!

We have so many forms of written communication that doing it "old school" was just gets harder. Texting is my primary way of communicating with family, and friends, and it is also my primary way of communicating with team members. I basically have team members located in the north, central, and south of the county. We have a team group text string and people are required to text when they get to the office, when they leave for a school site, when they arrive, when they leave, when they return to the office, and at the end of their workday. In turn, my secretary, who works at the main office, takes that information and files a daily paper copy that is later used for payroll purposes.

The above reads more complicated than it really is. It is a good way for me to know where everyone is. Also, in the event someone got into an accident, this is a good way to show they were on official travel for worker's comp. Lastly, if something were to happen in a particular location (lockdown, active shooter, etc), my folks would not be on any roster for these locations and no one would be looking to account for them.

It's kind of the same for our family, mostly because we are spread out as far west as California and as far east as Florida.

I recommend either a gel pen or a fountain for handwriting. They slide across the page better than most ballpoints. Gel pens are cheaper and easier to buy but somewhat limited in color choice. Fountain pens start at under ten dollars and go up from there.

Check out Jet Pens or Goulet Pens. You'll find everything you could possibly ever want there. 😄
