Garden - Friend or Foe?

This white grub will become a beetle in time. This time of the year he is waiting well burrowed in the earth. Come spring he'll want to eat the roots of plants. Not a friend of the garden. I founded several in my garden areas as I'm making them ready for spring. I served an eviction notice and good riddance.

My dog likes to dig up the grubs out of my yard... too bad he isn't able to get them all.

With my digging I'm find quite a few. I suspect the black beetles in my yard are the adults these grubs will grow into.

How else can you get rid of them beside an eviction notice?

There are insecticides which I don't plan on using.

There are natural ways as well Among these are

• Frequent tilling of your garden especially in the fall and spring.
• You can use a food grade fine powder of Diatomaceous Earth that scrapes the skin of these grubs
• A dish soap mixed with water
• crushed garlic is suppose to work

I'm sure there are other means as well.

There's a great weed killer as well made with soap, 30% vinegar and salt.

Also beneficial nematodes - that's how nature keeps them in balance... Along with help from other things like moles!

We live in a suburb. People here are allowed up to 6 chickens, but no roosters. I grew up with chickens and would love have some. Perhaps we will get a few down the road.

We have plenty of moles at the moment as well. Perhaps these grubs have attracted them.

I buried quite a number yesterday. There families left them behind to fend for themselves. This time Goliath won, but the hordes gather.
