I am back at needing help in knowing if I am hearing from the HS or is it myself saying things.
I have been spending a lot more time in prayer and in private time (being still) so I can hear from HIM. I started hearing so much that it scared me and sometimes I wonder if I am making all this up.

Do I just walk in faith and believe what I am hearing is from God? What if I am wrong? I know I do have discernment. I know I need to discern the spirits and all that I hear. Maybe I am just scared to step out in what I hear.

Sometimes what I hear is so strong. Would God tell me these things? Maybe I am just weird.

Not knowing you it's best if I just relate to you how the Holy Spirit has spoken to me in the past. These are somewhat strange.
  • My wife and I were at a Friday evening prayer service. And an audible voice that only I could hear said "beware, the strong man comes to ravage your house." Whether coincidental or not, when we got home we saw that our house was vandalized on the outside. Nothing major.
  • The Holy Spirit told me my brother-in-law's wife was expecting their second child. It was a family get together to make the announcement and before I saw her, I congratulated him. I don't know why I said anything, it just came out. I had no way of knowing, nobody did.
  • In the days leading up to my mother's death, I started warning my wife that it was possible that we would be written out of the will in favor of my sister even though my mother had been telling me it was going to be an even split. Four years she had been telling me this. The Holy Spirit placed this on my heart and I had peace about it. So my mother died and as is common we all met at a restaurant after the burial. (My mother was in her 90s). After the meal, I asked my sister if we should meet about the will. She then told me it was all left to her. So I said fine and we parted. My brother-in-law (different brother-in-law) comes up to me and says, "how does it feel to be a 49er?" "I said what do you mean, you weren't born in 1949?" He said "no, a 49er. I panned for gold and found it. You panned for gold and came up empty." So I said, "I don't know what you mean, but have a good life" and walked away. My wife was extremely upset at how I was treated by my own family, but I told her it didn't matter. This life may be the closest to Heaven they'll ever know. My brother-in-law is an atheist and my sister is involved in the occult.
  • Our 3rd dog loved to sit on our laps whenever we were using the computer. He was a 4.0 pound Pomeranian. (I'll post some pictures sometime.) Well he fell off my wife's lap while I was driving home from work. In that length of time, my wife and a breeder friend rushed him to a Vet Hospital because he was paralyzed. The Vet Hospital said there was nothing they could do. He couldn't move his legs at all. My wife just cried and cried. I laid hands on him and prayed to God for his healing and at least 10 more years as Hezekiah did in the Old Testament. I felt a warmth come over me and knew that God heard my prayer. I had to hold him up so he could urinate and I hand fed him so he'd eat. Mentally, he seemed alert. Slowly over the weeks I saw progress until he could support himself. My wife (a stronger Christian than I am) still blamed herself and couldn't see the consistent progress he was making. Within about 10 months, he was back out in the yard with his big brother (Sheltie) and sister (bigger Pomeranian). He was fully healed and pranced around the yard like he was a Clydesdale. God (and the Holy Spirit is God) gave me the 10 years I asked for.
We don't know how the Holy Spirit will speak to us. These are just three different examples from my life.

Thank you. Sometimes I hear a voice in the back of my head as a whisper. There are many times I hear a louder voice in the back of my head that stops me in my tracks and i know that i know its the HS. Its the softer voice i often wonder about. It comes in the same way, its just softer.
Example: i liked to walk during lunch in the park. i spend that hour walking in nature and praying and talking to god. Then i tell God i just want to walk in silence so i can hear from him. as i walk in silence for a while i will then start having all these thoughts that are not so much whispers in the back of my head. Its like a conversation just going on in my head. The crazy part is afterwards i will sometimes get confirmation on what my discussion was with God during those walks. Which makes me think these conversations in my mind are from GOD. but sometimes I dont. Am i just being nutty?

One thing I notice is that you address fear right in the beginning of your post. That fear in itself will contaminate your faith and cause confusion within you. So first things first... get rid of the fear. When the fear thoughts and feelings come... make the choice to not fear. Say it loud... I refuse to fear.

Then once the fear has been refused, ask the Father to verify things for you with the Word. He's not a tyrant, and desires for you to feel secure and comfortable that it is Him speaking to you. If it's something you feel unclear about let Him know that you put this thought in His hands and are waiting on Him for confirmation in your spirit.

One thing I noticed was if the thoughts are pushy and non peaceful... they are not the Holy Spirt... unless it's an emergency, and it has to be done right now.

I got something that I believed to be the Father asking me to do something about 2 weeks ago. So after I laid it at His feet and prayed in the spirit... I decided to take a step of faith and contact the other person.

So if it has to so with another person, and you feel peaceful and nothing telling you to stop... move forward, take that step of faith.

Part of me thinks though you need to figure out what your afraid Of? Before you can move forward with anything. If your afraid of failure or getting it wrong... what's the worst that can happen? Address all the what it's and worse case scenarios right now. Once you get those settled... then ask for verification in your spirit. And always check with the Word. See what it says. If you find a verse that agrees or seems right, then ask yourself does the Word say anything else. Meaning say you here the verse to go and be everything to all people. Ok in the thoughts that are there... is there anything else negative involved? Are there any other Scriptures that may say something opposite of what the thoughts are?

I think I am afraid of making things up and being fake. But several things I have heard I have received confirmation on. You are right, I am fearful of what I hear sometimes even when God shows that it was him speaking to me. This will sound crazy, but sometimes I fear being successful in things. No idea why. I am glad you brought this up as I do need to work on this. And I know I should not be fearful. I do need to walk and believe. But then I think what if I am believing a lie and look stupid or setting myself up for failure or disappointment. I dont want to be disappointed.

I have been through and still sometimes encounter the same thing... however, the thoughts above, that I quoted... it the devil whispering in your ear. He's trying to place doubt in your heart and mind to pull away from what the Father has planned for you. To get you into disbelief and disobedience.

It can be scary in a way to be successful, for with success comes a lot of responsibility and persecution. And if your past marriage has anything to do with it ... its something that has been learned and possibly drilled into your mind.

But this is the time right now where the rubber meets the road and you have to decide once and for all... It's all or nothing no matter what. Because you know you won't be happy or satisfied sitting on the fence.

You've been through years of persecution so you already know what that's like, and can handle it. Especially now that so many things in your life have changed for the better, and your closer to The Father. You have become or are able to be like a duck... And let all the junk that people may say roll right off your back.

And all the worries and fear and other junk that your going through right now is just stuff the enemy is throwing at you to stop you in your tracks. And needs to be taken captive. It is a process... But if you can learn to take those thoughts captive... you'll be better off, and things will be clearer.

Greetings CoffeeDrinker! Been I while since I visited the Forum, but thought I should drop in and say hello to everyone again : )

I've noticed your threads often center on themes like this one (I read through another one you posted last year about what to do with a scripture you receive from the Lord personally).

Let me say this. I used to have similar concerns about hearing from God, until about a year or so ago when I started operating in the gift of interpreting dreams. I since interpret for both myself and others. What I learned was this: I now believe dreams, visions and prophecy were the primary means God always intended to use in speaking to His people personally, yet these gifts slowly faded from the church after the New Testament era. However, we are now entering the times when Joel 2:28 is increasingly going to be fulfilled. He now speaks to me about personal matters through dreams and visions constantly, and guides my life through them. But keep in mind, too, that I am also an avid student of the word of God, and have dedicated the last 30 years of my life to it. To some degree I think this is proper preparation for being able to interpret Biblical symbolism properly.

I realize some may be fearful of the suggestion about trusting in dreams, visions and prophecy as the primary means through which He speaks to us on personal matters, but just as you have stated how He has confirmed a number of things He said to you in prayer, the same thing happens with dreams and interpretation, only more so.

I have also encountered some who fear that those who prophecy and/ or interpret are given too much power over the lives of others. But scripture simply states to prove all things, and hold fast to that which is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21), yet to NOT despise prophecyings (v.20), which is in effect what such an argument does.

Thought I would offer my two cents. Let me know if you have questions.

God bless,

We are to be Spirit Led!
We are to be Directed by His Spirit not relying on dreams.

I am studying more and spending more time in prayer as well. God has been so good to me in bringing me deeper and closer to him in fellowship and showing me so many things about myself and about the Holy Trinity and the Kingdom of God. I have been on a wonderful journey with the Lord over the last few months to basically the last year. I believe I have changed so much.

God does speak to me in many ways. I try to always have an ear to hear and eyes to see. I try to be vigilant by being spirit led (walking in the spirit) 24/7. It's not always easy, but it's becoming easier the closer I get to God. All I can say is that God is incredible in his love to us. I am so very thankful for what he is doing in my life and how he is showing me so many things about himself, the holy trinity and the kingdom of God. It's truly a blessing to walk with God and be close to him. He has been showing me a lot about myself and through this process I have been transforming. It's wonderful.

And those are wonderful words! You have a sweet spirit, CD, and you can rest assured that the Lord takes pleasure in it and will reward you for walking that way before Him. :)

I am loving my relationship with Him. It's wonderful and I hope I can walk in that same love towards others. I pray and seek him and it's wonderful how I find him and then how he reveals more of himself to me. I know that is biblical - seek me and you will find me. God is faithful and has opened my eyes to the truth, the spirit world, the kingdom of God, the world we live in on this earth. I find that love is the strongest thing that binds everything together. the love that I feel from Him is so incredible and powerful that it draws me in and I crave it daily. As David said, Please dont ever take your spirit from me. I understand those words. Do with me what you will, but please do not take your spirit from me.

I crave my time with the Lord and His love is powerful in changing me. I really want everyone I know to walk in this kind of love and have it for themselves. I have been a christian for a long time, yet I wasted so many years in rebellion and not walking with Him and living in that shelter of love. That is so sad and I know others live this way, too. I pray I can be a blessing to them and love them the way God loves me. I hope I can truly say with all my heart that all that I do brings glory to the name of the Lord.

Nope, lol
Blessings to you
Well then, as a final note in closing, I suppose I speak out so strongly in favor of these things because, while I do feel there is such a thing as being led by the Spirit personally, I feel we are living a short-changed version of Christianity when the full of array of the spiritual gifts are not in operation. Granted, these are things that must be prayed for, but prophecy was especially something Paul urged believers to eagerly desire and seek after (1 Corinthians 14:1), and dreams and visions are merely extensions of the prophetic gift (Numbers 12:6, Jeremiah 23:28).

Blessings in Christ Jesus,

God has given each of us spiritual gifts snd there is a gift of discernment you can certainly ask for this.
He can speak to us through dreams too. Certainly Joseph had this gift. Job mentioned it. Peter and Paul had visions.
Often God speaks to us in a still small voice.

All of us can prophesy if we are reading His word. Dont quench the spirit. To get deeper with GOd we need to make time to hear Him. Many people tend to think of prayer as a one way conversation we just talk to God and dont expect Him to answer us. We can be quick to pray long winded prayers and then say Amen and then basically hang up! Um hello? GOd wants us to hear Him not just us talk all the time!

God often does not directly speak to us out loud because if you can imagine it would be terrifying for everyone to hear the Almighty talk we would all fall down on our knees. BUt the times He did speak in the Bible not just through his prophets (who wrote down everything He said) He spoke when Jesus was baptised and again at his transfiguration and said 'this is my beloved Son, Hear ye him' and everyone heard it.

So what does that mean for us christians, we have a conversation with Jesus! And Jesus understand us cos He was human just like us too. So its not like we have to go up to the mountain like Moses did and cover his face.

Love your puppy! My wife has a Yorki as well. Smart and stubborn but really cute. My wife calls her Coco and I call her Killer.

As for your question, IMO, the way to know the leading of the Holy Spirit is to know the Word of God. The Bible is the bottom line of our wisdom and understanding.

1 Tim. 3:16........
"Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory."

I have found that because the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, the Spirit will use the Word of God to speak to us and show us God's will for us and the Holy Spirit will then bring the Scriptures to our mind at just the time we need to be encouraged or strengthened.

Now then the question then must be, how do I know that what I am being lead to do or say is actually from the Holy Spirit????
That is where knowing the Word of God comes in.

The Bible says in 1 John 4:1.................
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world".

We must test our thoughts against the only thing that is available to us and that is the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit will never direct us or speak to us to do anything which is contrary to the Word of God.

No matter what wisdom we think we may have; regardless of the advice we get; no matter what peace we feel; and no matter what we might sense in prayer if it runs contrary to Scripture, it is wrong and not God’s will.
