Two ways to tell if someone has been saved:
1. There is a change. (he/she is a new creation)
2. There will be a chastening. (discipline from God)

I have never fully understood what it means to be chastened by God, i do understand that when God chastened the israelites he caused the devil to work in their lives and brought problems and tough situations their way. The weird thing is that is what he does when he favours someone as well. Look at Job and look at Israel going through the desert. Both were tough, both were problematic, but at the time he was chastening Israel but in the time of Job (he) was favoured.

We need to keep in mind that God is "omniscient" - all-knowing.
He knows what has, is, and will happen. So when God "chastens" someone, He knows that
is ultimately for their good.
