Herod

Matthew 2:7-10

7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.
8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." 9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

Herod is that great reminder of Satan's design for us: he is a liar and
murderer, and has been since the beginning! (See John 8:44.) Under the
pretense of worship, Herod seeks to eliminate God's choice for the
throne Herod thinks he himself occupies. Satan had so blinded Herod
that he would even use the truth of prophetic Scripture to kill God's
chosen Messiah. Thwarted only because of God's timing and will, Herod
anticipates Judas, who will betray the Lord for another type of
personal gain. A question we need to ask is this: "How many times have
I betrayed him for nothing?"
