PS: You must have been looking at part of my header! (presumably it's the tattoo bit rather than the faith bit that you don't identify with... )

Yes, many Christians today believe this is the indeed the case; there is actually a thread all about it (I myself didn't start it); I'll post it to your profile page.

You're right; it's almost like an information explosion. (But it can feel nice to be among friends, too...)
