Reports: Abbas Wants Europe to Shun Hamas

Mahmoud Abbas [Abu Mazen], the leader of the Palestinian Authority [PA] and its largest constituent faction, Fatah, wants Europe to continue its boycott of rival Palestinian faction Hamas. The two organizations are in on-off negotiations over the formation of a unity government. The talks are being brokered by Egypt, with Fatah officials meeting in Cairo with their Hamas counterparts from both Gaza and Damascus.

Abbas made the plea while in Brussels last week, according reports quoting Palestinian Information Minister Riad Al-Malki. Abbas is of the opinion that lifting restrictions on Hamas will further jeopardize the talks.

Hamas controls the Gaza Strip, while Fatah and the PA run the other Palestinian territory, the West Bank [Judea and Samaria].
