12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

I am the light of the world
Hello siddhikoli,

“I am the light of the world” is one of my favorite parts of the gospel of John and means a lot to me personally.

It is famously the second of seven statements by Jesus in John that begin with: “I am…”

Others may have a different views but here is my interpretation:

Remember in Exodus 3:14, when He is asked His name by Moses, that God tells Moses, “I AM THAT I AM”. Here, in John’s gospel, Jesus is deliberately invoking this “I am” phrasing.

Jesus knows the world is in darkness and is full of temptation, sin and evil.

In this world of darkness Jesus is the light, this symbolizes the holiness of God.

Further, Jesus is not just any light, He is “the” light. Jesus IS “the light of the world”, and he is the revelation of the truth and glory of God.

The person who follows Jesus Christ has a light to guide them out of the darknesses. He brings the light of salvation and eternal life to those who follow Him out of that darkness.

Let’s see what others have to add.
God Bless you and those you love.
