Jonah 4:6-7

Jonah 4:6-7

KJV 6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. 7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.

JuliaSmith 6 And Jehovah God will appoint a gourd, and it will come up from above to Jonah to be a shadow over his head to deliver to him from his evil. And Jonah will rejoice over the gourd with great joy. 7And God will appoint a worm in the going up of the morning for the morrow, and it will strike the gourd, and it will dry up.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

6 Jonah was happy because this vine grew and provided shade but he was waiting for God to destroy these people, who repented and God forgave. Jonah’s priorities are all wrong, people’s souls are more important than his comfort.

7 God then has a worn ruin the vine; this was done to teach Jonah and help wake him up to God’s priorities. Sometimes we have to have wake up calls to get our focus on what God wants and what we should be doing.

Thanks for your insight.

Something to think about... Chapter 4 presents an Idiom.... Why should Jonah care about Assyria? What is the bigger picture that God is trying to illustrate?

This book is about far more than simply Assyria repenting because God wants to save some children... There is a bigger picture application to Israel and also to us as Christians living within Gentile nations......

Let me give you this hint....

The Castor bean bush is Assyria
Jonah is the nation of Israel
The Worm is sin.
