jonah

when jonah was thrown over board and the whale swallowed him.. ( please note jonah did pray in the belly of whale )

back to the question did jonah die in the belly of the whale and was restricted

or was he kept alive those 3 days i would like to show some interesting scripture for our discussion { this is if this can generate any discussion } i have enlarged 4-6 ..

1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

2And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

7When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

10And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

out of curiosity was he dead brought back to life.. or kept alive ?

I doubt that he died, but God hasn't given us the answer to the question.

What is the significance of Jesus mentioning Jonah in the whale's belly? Why not just say that He would rise on the third day?

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

YES I HAD THOUGHT OF THAT this is not a theological debate but a simple discussion the sign of jonah
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
christ arose from the dead after 3 days jonah 2:6 “I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.”

once again this is a discussion . its not about who is right who is wrong.. i am surprised it has went this far these scripture can suggest he died and was ressurrected .

Psalm 16:10

10 ;For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. the two words corruption.

A foreshadowing of Christ. Throughout the OT we see these foreshadowing events or archetypes of Christ.

You're absolutely right!

The entire book of Jonah is a foreshadowing of the work of Christ.

In seminary, I did a paper on the theology of the book of Jonah. What my research showed me was amazing. Jonah foreshadows the gospel and the joining together of the Jews and Gentiles. The way the book presents this is through the names given for God in the when dealing with Gentiles and Jews. In each case where Gentiles are the focus the name Elohim is used, but each time Jonah is the focus, the name YHWH is used. Elohim is the name given for God when deals with humanity in general, and YHWH is the covenant name for God when dealing with Israel. At the end of the book, when Jonah is moping because God forgave the Ninevite gentiles, and God speaks with him, God is assigned the name YHWH Elohim, thus foreshadowing the acceptance of Gentiles into God's family.

What was the purpose of God in the story?

Jonah 1:1-2....
"Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

God wanted to save Nineveh but Jonah didn't.
Jonah 1:17
"Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. "

While it is true that there is no definitive answer, I am of the opinion that Jonah was not alive inside the fish but that he died and God raised him from the dead.

Jonah is a type/picture in only one area to Jesus and that is in his death and resurrection.

And that‟s the way the Lord Jesus put it when He was asked for a sign.

He said, in Matthew 12:39 -40..........
"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

Right here is where the question must be answered.......was the Lord Jesus alive or dead?

“Well,” everyone reading this will or should say....., “He was dead for three days.” Yes He was. Did He rise from the dead on the 3rd day! Every single person reading this will say YES!

Now then.....was Jonah alive or dead? He had to be dead in order to bear out what our Lord is saying.
You see, it just makes NO sense at all for Jesus to use that example if Jonah was not resurrected from the dead.

Also, I do not think that the Scripture passage in Jonah makes it clear that this man was alive for the three days.

And then may I add this: If I‟m wrong, and Jonah was alive—and if in heaven someday Jonah comes up to me and says, “Boy, did you misrepresent me!”—then I want to say to him, “I‟m very sorry, Jonah. But you should have made it lots more clear for old country boys like me"!

Several years ago I had a professor who likened Jonah as a picture of Christ. He also said the same thing about David as well.

Now after many years I am lead to believe Jonah makes a better type of Christ than David.
However, if we are going to measure him by the sin in his life, neither of them is a type of Christ when it comes to their sin or their backsliding or rebellion.

It seems to me that Jonah is a type in only one area, and that is in his death and resurrection.
