Merry Christmas!

A perfectly fine greeting to say even for the “hardliners” this time of year because…

Most likely The Holy Spirit implanted the light in December to become The Light of The Whole World during the darkest of seasons.

CELEBRATE!

Merry Christmas!

Re: Jesus's Conception

Hello Mabel Lean,

Thank you for your inquiry about the time of Christ’s birth and the wise men’s visit.

In our article, “The Birth of Jesus,” we address this question. The Bible simply does not say exactly when Jesus was born. It’s actually easier to confirm when He was not born, based on the scriptural record. As the article explains, Christ could not have been born on December 25 in the middle of winter.

We can also state from Scripture that the wise men arrived quite some time after Christ was born. They were not there at the time of His birth, giving Him presents while He was still in the manger. Our article “The Birth of Jesus: Myths and Misperceptions” includes a detailed explanation of this subject. (See also our article “Why Did the Wise Men Bring Gifts to Jesus?”)

Our article “Jesus Christ vs. Christmas” states:

Not only is any hint of a celebration of Christ’s birth absent from the New Testament, but the Bible is also strikingly silent when it comes to the actual date of His birth. The most detailed account of Christ’s birth is found in Luke 2. Here we find that at the time of Jesus’ birth a census was taking place and shepherds were “living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night” (Luke 2:1-8).

Because of the rainy and cold weather in Judea during the winter months, this would not have been a good time to take a census. Furthermore, shepherds typically sheltered their flocks at night during the cold winter months. Though Luke 2:1-8 doesn’t give us specifics, it does establish that Jesus’ birth was not in winter.

The fact is that God purposefully did not record the exact time of Christ’s birth. Nowhere in the Gospel accounts does Jesus reveal His birthday or ask people to celebrate it! Neither do we get any hint that the original apostles celebrated it after His death, resurrection and ascension.

Despite this, many have attempted to pinpoint the time of Christ’s birth. Some have tried to identify which census is referred to in the Gospel account. Others have tried to correlate the biblical description of the “star” that was followed by the wise men with a comet or some other celestial event (though this effort is misguided, as the “star” described in Scripture does not behave like any physical, celestial object; it was clearly a miraculous occurrence apparent to the wise men).

We feel the most reasonable speculation places the birth of Christ in the autumn, based upon the account in Luke 1:5. See our blog post titled “When Was Jesus Born, Part 1.”

Subject: Jesus's Conception

Question: In modern calendar what date (range) was Jesus conceived?

If one assumes He may have been born in late September or early October—harvest time—can we assume He was conceived in the darkest part of the year near the Winter Solstice?

Picture the Angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she would conceived The Only Begotten Son during the darkest time on earth yet be the very LIGHT of the WORLD for all time!
