About the looks:

http://www.riverofgod.com/ is not very readable. i think its a bit too bright. you can either diffuse the background picture or just include another one.

i like the design of http://www.ourchurch.com/member/h/holyspirit/
this ones really good.

what i appreciate is the amount of contents you have on the sites. remember, the more pictures you put on the site, the more time it takes to load ;) . you can come up with a single logo for all the sites to represent a network.
