Payroll giving

Does anyone work for an organisation that gives to charity?
Just wondering how they organise it as I heard that some do it by opting into payroll giving (comes straight out of your pay) and its tax deductible.

I was hoping to get the organisation I work for sponsoring or giving to a local charity but no luck so far...seems like they promise and then don't do it.

I can think of many charities that would be good to support, especially ones that help children. Many christian ministries can be considered a charity. I know my local supermarket has supported church community meals with donations of food, and the department store Farmers has always sponsored the Christmas parade.

The Warehouse also give to Women's Refuge, and fund planting native trees. I wonder if they only do it when asked, or whether the organisation itself needs to take the initiative.

We work with an organization called International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

One box of food will feed a person for a whole month.

We're very pleased with our partnership and will continue in 2022.

How does that work Bob? Where do they get the boxes of food from or do you all contribute your pay towards this?

Our SBC Cooperative Program does a similar operation which we participate in.

We have also partnered with Samaritan's Purse now for several years and it is a wonderful operation.

Hey Lanolin;

We have a recurring donation monthly (each box is $25.00 for a month of food) to the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.
They are located in Chicago, Jerusalem, Toronto and Seoul. They package and deliver the food boxes to Israel, mostly to the elderly survivors of the holocaust.

We also partner with the SBC Cooperative Program and Samaritan's Purse as Major shared. Both have a similar operation.

Samaritan Purse collect from each church and distributes Christmas gifts to children all over the world called Operation Christmas Child. Our church donated gifts this year for the 5th year. Praise God!

Though these are good programs, our church Board or individuals still require annual reports for good accountability before we vote to participate in the New Year.

I did help out with Samaritans Purse/Operation Christmas child one year sorting the shoe boxes, as their distribution centre is in my town.

But our church was collectively doing Angel Tree ministry instead, which is to children of prisoners in NZ. We donate gifts.

I have heard of IFCJ another church I went to was working with them but I didn't know they did food boxes. They used to organise trips to Israel but I don't think they do that anymore. I've never been on an overseas missions with church. I know YWAM organised some things but I was too old for YWAM who only seemed to take young people. They went to Australia and Taiwan I think.

Just wasn't in a place or position where I could afford to do so, when most of mission is right on our doorsteps...and so is poverty and hardship. Otherwise the church does sponsor their own overseas missionaries, and we have a missions fundraising dinner to help them. They are in different countries worldwide. I don't really know how long they are there for...I think many have been for years but there has been short-term mission trips. Though I don't really think much of short term missions. I think you need to be committed long term for a mission to be effective, like what can you really do in just 2 weeks? You need to be doing it all the time or every year on a regular basis.

I like that group.

I had a payroll deduction & allotment that went to my church.

The company also supported local & national charities. From time to time the company would also encourage and facilitate employees volunteering personal time for the charities it supported.

I recall when I worked in public libraries we had one day to volunteer at a local charity. I remember doing some gardening for a healing centre, I can't remember what else I did...as a team, we did a night walk that raised money for breast cancer sufferers (my boss suffered from breast cancer, she survived).

My bookshop sells christmas cards and the proceeds support two charities. One is Variety, and the other is Make a Wish foundation.

I know another bookshop in the same chain (although all independently owned) has a giving tree that supports the Salvation Army.

I tried to get the bookshop involved with this but no go. They were going to send me some posters which I was going to put in the school library but I never got them. I ended up just giving withdrawn/swapped books to my readers at school.

Hey Lanolin;

I like Kiwi Christmas Books and am impressed how they have grown since 2019.

Hmm it turns out my boss said he'd give the extra books (reading copies) to the Women's Refuge.

I was like, what even the murder mysteries? Or the ones with serial killers in them..?!

Boss gave me a Christmas bonus so I'm going to spend it on my family yum cha..I COULD spend it on books...tho I do buy books and give them away already.

Thing is us workers chipped in to give our boss a Restaurant voucher for Christmas.

The thing about Christmas sometimes is that those who can ill afford to feel the need to give to their bosses as appreciation, tho we don't expect much in return. In some organisations, all the staff need to pay out of their own pocket to have a Christmas/end of year party. And then feel obligated to go, because the managers won't put one on for them.

I felt like that every year when money was tight and we hadn't been paid our holiday bonuses yet, we'd be expected to chip in for secret santa and staff parties...and I felt that wasn't fair for us workers, because it takes a LOT of organisation to find gifts and prepare for parties - food, costumes, decorations, transport, venue etc.

Don't get me wrong it is fun to do these things but we also have to do our own jobs as well, on a pay much less than the managers/higher ups.

Hello Lanolin;

I had to respond to what you shared. Since I retired 7 years ago I totally forgot about the Christmas bonuses, lunches, parties, etc...

I worked 43 years and during the early years we had those Holiday parties at a time when the company paid 100%. Toward the end of my career we had less of these parties but the company still paid but with a tighter belt because of economic times.

At the end of my career if we chipped in to get our boss a birthday, Christmas or new baby gift we gave what we could secretly because some just couldn't afford to contribute.

Even in our Payroll giving, weekly offering or missions offering, Jesus teaches us about giving from our hearts and sacrifice from His teaching in Mark 21. Through the years I have grown to serve by that.

I remember when both my mum and dads work had christmas parties and us children got invited and we also got given gifts.

I think its nice when companies do this and it also made an impression on me as a child that those organisations were good to work for and looked after not just their employees but also their families.

I think it is very different to todays organisations that don't really care if you have a family or not. You just do the work and go home.

Miss Lanolin, so sorry to hear that the business situation in your area was responsible for the cut. We will pray that you find something that is more to your liking and enjoyable.

God bless.

Hey Lanolin;

I'm sorry you were cut. Do you get to collect unemployment?

I'm already praying for your next job.
aw thanks no cos my other job I still have thank God.
They will pay out holiday pay etc. I'm not sure why can't just keep me on as a casual but they'll find out soon enough if they get too lean, someone gets sick and there's not enough cover.
