Payroll giving

People do that and some send out hundreds of applications but get nothing back. There aren't that many flower shops near me though. In fact there's only ONE as the rest have all gone out of business or moved premises. Also there was only ONE bookshop in the whole mall. I don't have the energy to job hunt like its a tinder dating app. When you do that you just end up with a whole lot of jobs like 'gentleman's escort' or 'telemarketing'. When narrowed down to my area, because sitting in traffic for an hour before even getting to work is not something I want to do (or fall asleep, tired and hungry on way home) there's not all that much. Family was like..what, you can't deliver flowers. You're not a registered courier driver and they'd probably want you to drive all across town. I'm like really. I thought the whole point of getting flowers delivered by interflora was that is was close to where you want the flowers delivered so they'd be fresh. Shows you what I know then! Also, who would want to click and collect their own flowers? Most people buy flowers to give to someone else!

Hey Lanolin;

I always felt you would make a good entrepreneur, working for yourself and having employees. How about signing with an agency and being a contractor?

I do that sometimes but some of those jobs are just one offs, like assignments.
I think I'd like to have a project to do, or something that's creative. I don't really know what it will be yet. There's no kind of agency for librarians unless it's voluntary.

I think I'd like to do something in the area of research, but not market research (which I have done).

Hi Lanolin
Talking of creative projects. You love books and you love children. Do you like writing? You know what children like to read.

How do you feel about writing short stories, or articles for children? If you like researching it could prove to be very interesting. For instance, if it is coming up to school time after holidays you choose something to do with school, let's say - ink. Start off with telling them about invisible ink. Google how they can make it themselves, they will have fun with that. Then Google how proper ink is made and tell them, in your own words of course how that is done.

Whether you fancy stories or articles you can send a few at a time to magazines or a publisher.

I've started another book just for my children to read but I don't send anything to publishers as many aren't interested in unsolicited manuscripts or you need an agent, very hard to get published these days. With self-publishing you need to pour a lot of your own money into it, and you are on your own in terms of marketing and editing and proofreading. The finished product is never quite as good/professional as a proper publishing house with teams of specialist book editors backing an author, however they only want what will be a 'hit' and sell just like music publishers.

Children don't read magazines, we actually don't subscribe to any in the library (because nobody was reading them) and the school teachers just get the Education Gazette. I am not sure how you'd get published in that plus you need photographs as well. If they commissioned me maybe!

My book I've started has a chapter on how books were invented. I've just started it on how writing was invented but its going to be a long story! I started with footprints in the sand.

I think Jesus got it right when he told parables. They were short and to the point lol.

Yes, writing a magazine article and even more writing a book is a lot of hard work.

At most of the companies I worked for if one wants to have anything published that mentioned the company, its project or its customers, the material has to be evaluated by the company, sometimes requiring approval of the customer, which was usually military or government. This usually results in the company demanding revision after revision before approval is given.

I was once tasked with commenting on a friend's book in progress. I gave a couple of suggestions, along with a stronger correction. As far as I know the book never made it into print but a few years later at another company I was asked to review a resume of my friend. I noted that she listed me as a co-author of her book. I still don't know if she added that to her resume because she knew I was working on the project for which she wanted to be hired.

If writing a memoir you might need to be careful to change the names since some people may not want to be identified for privacy reasons, should your book become famous...then it's open season.

Jesus was always careful not to name and shame people when he told his parables, he always said 'a certain man' instead of saying well BOB did this horrible sin. lol

I am thinking of doing school holiday programs but would need to buy a franchise and be my own boss! What do you think...?! It could be a library based program and I would do bookish activities and library trips...and all the librarians who don't have work in the school holidays could be my employees. Currently there is no school holiday program in my school and I don't really know of any in my local area.

hmm might be a bit risky to start that up during covid pandemic.

I drove past another flower shop on main road today that I hadn't noticed before. Actually two. Maybe I can drop my CV into them as well. I don't know whether to go in person, print out my CV and hand it to them. Or just send it to email.

I could probably print out my cv at school but thats kind of what you shouldn't really do print your CV out at your other job! Otherwise go the printing shop and print it out. I don't know yet. It would only be three copies. But its not like I would give up my other job.

The other flower shop is right opposite the hospital so I could deliver flowers to the hospital. The first one was next to a funeral home. lol And the third one is near the cemetery.

Hello Lanolin;

What does CV mean?

The flowers for the hospital and funerals may be a good idea. You already know gardening so this gives you an edge.

I did quite a few funerals the last 3 months and was blown away by the price of flowers. If you are considering this business opportunity, do a market comparison.

Seems to be a sort of resume...
(Google does it again, lol.)

It seems a CV is more detailed than a resume.

The old rule used to be to keep your resume to one page because most workers stayed with one job for many years.

This would be impossible in these times because most workers don't have longevity in one job, but transition to multiple jobs for various reasons which is not a bad thing. It's just a changing with the times.

Perhaps the CV has become the norm in searching for a job - multi education, publishing, etc...

CV is Latin for 'Curriculum Vitae'
Basically means all the education/training/experience you've had that might make you suitable for the role. Not just a list of all the jobs you've held previously but things like what you studied in school, hobbies, projects, languages, awards, voluntary work, certificates, character references etc.

I'm going to be fundraising by selling flower bulbs.
It will be for the community garden, although it's the bulbs themselves I want, not so much the profits lol. The profits will just be used to buy more bulbs.

I passed by the flower shop yesterday opposite the hospital so decided to drop in and ask but they said they'd already just taken on an extra person, but I could drop my business card into them (I didn't have it on me at the time) and I think I will email them my new CV as well. You never know with staff shortages and or they need casual back ups for busy periods

My business card just says I'm a gardener and my contact details. I don't actually have a garden 'business' but I am always busy doing my garden.

The lady there seems nice its a family business and she says her daughter was helping her doing deliveries.

I emailed my CV hope they got it as I haven't been out and about much this week.

But..I saw the hospital has a thing where you can do payroll giving. Especially the children's hospital, and you can donate things children need while they stay in hospital. Some have donated books, toys, activities, pyjamas, etc.

I know the few times I was in hospital if I didn't have visitors it was very boring. So books are appreciated. I remember one time I stayed there and I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
I think uplifting, encouraging books with happy endings ought to be in hospital libraries.

Another flower shop was advertising for help so I sent them my CV today, fingers crossed.

Otherwise, I did make a profit from my bulbs. I'm thinking of buying a pet lamb, except, its only enough to buy one. When the lamb is grown can shear it for wool and knit a jumper.
