Rescuers pour milk through air pipe to feed 69 trapped miners

Rescuers have poured hundreds of liters of milk into a 800 m long ventilation pipe to keep alive the 69 miners trapped in a flooded state-run coal mine in central China for over three days.
The miners used their helmets to collect the milk, their only food since they were trapped in the flooded shaft at Zhijian colliery in Shanxian County in Henan Province, early on Sunday.

"They told me that they felt much better after drinking the milk," vice governor of Henan, Shi Jichun said after speaking to miners over phone.

Rescuers poured 382 litres of milk at around 9:00 pm on Monday, followed by another 167 litres yesterday morning.

They ruled out solid food for fear of blocking the pipe.

"The milk will help the miners keep their strength up, which is comforting," Shi was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
