Self Entitlement

Dear brothers and sisters;

I was having a conversation with a close friend this morning and the topic of entitlement came up. At times as a man of God, husband, worker or joiner (someone who likes to participate,) I would get this attitude that I deserve and expect what's mine, or having the best seat at the event, or everyone being agreeable to my stand on apologetics.

The world has it's own definition of entitlement such as doing whatever I want to my body, afterall, it's MY body, or I can spend what I want, after all it's MY money or I can excuse MY selfishness because I deserve it...

Some of us reading this topic may be able to relate and present different views of self entitlement, or in other words, we get it!

I feel that self entitlement can escalate and become a way of life within a person, and this can lead to chronic disappointment leading oneself to shut down from the family, work, circle of friends and even the Church.

Paul taught the Philippians about the joy in serving even while he was in prison. He reminded them that Christ laid down his self entitlements so that we might share in His glory. Paul goes on to share that walking with Christ is a "knowing and growing" relationship with Him even in the relationship with others, by putting aside self and replacing it by serving others to the point of humility instead of recognition.

Philippians 2:5-8, 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Trusting and not trusting should not be an on and off switch when we don't get what we want, though in some way we feel we deserve it. But where did /does Jesus stand?

What are your thoughts?

God bless you all and your families.

There is only one Caramel and Vanilla ice--cream left at the shop. That is what I came for and I got there first, that makes me entitled to it.

But Rose, one of my neighbours, is stood behind me
She is looking at the ice-cream. I know she wants that ice-cream for when she is looking after her grandchildren this afternoon. Rose counted out her last few coins in her hand.

I am entitled to that ice-cream. What? You don't think I am? You think I should buy it and give it to Rose?
What a funny lot you Christians are. 🤣

I know for myself it is always a cautionary thing to me when God has provided victory or blessing. The flesh gets in the way and the tempter is laying that bait of entitlement so thick.

I just finished Philippians this week. Paul served Christ, then Paul served the people and then he was last. We aren't entitled a single thing when we realize how deserving we are of eternal hell and yet through Christ we have been saved eternally forever. I admit in my younger years - that thought was an afterthought. Oh I am saved so... I am entitled. Not so. We should always uphold the blessings, inheritance and eternal salvation package in Christ as a reminder that there is only one that deserve all glory, honor and praise. That is Jesus.

A servant isn't entitled. Neither is a prisoner. We humble ourselves to serve just as Christ did.

For me it is about being ready, prepared, surrendered and always participating in serving and giving [as suppose to being entitled because of what I am doing or feeling].

I guess that is my thought.

I am thinking that your story was NOT actually you. I am thinking that YOU as a Christian would want to give that ice cream to Rose.

You see, to think that you are entitled to that ice cream means that you think that the owner of the shop place it that for YOU.
The fact is however he put it there to sell to everyone, but you happened to get in line before Rose.

Christ IN YOU therefore would say (Because you said...."I know she wants that ice-cream")-----IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE!!!!

Hello Cosia;

Does this mean you stepped aside and did Rose purchase the last ice cream?

One thing I wanted to mention;

I don't feel asking for something out of need or help is not being self-entitled. Positive expectations in this case is normal and it's what we would do for others when they ask.
That is something I really struggle with. If someone else needs help I am happy to give, but when I am in need I find my pride keeps me from asking for help. I turn to God for help and then stand in His way when He sends someone to help me. I am a stubborn man for sure.

Self entitlement is the opposite of humility. It is a reflection of an attitude of arrogance and hubris. Acts 12:20-23 should serve as a lesson on how God feels about such attitudes.

Hi bobinfaith

Rose didn't have enough money for the Ice cream . I bought it and told her I didn't like that flavour too much so I gave it to her. Her husband was a bus driver. He died very young and left Rose With 4 very young children to bring up by herself. Now she helps to provide for her grandchildren. She is a very humble Christian.
God Bless

So can self entitlement be a belief that, If I do XXXXXX and recieve X, its really not fair. Or, someone else does X and gets XXXXXX, is not fair?
If I am angry when I am rejected, or disrespected, is this self entitlement?
good topic. thanks

Hello Via;

This is a good followup question. Yes, depending which side of the situation you're on. If you do XXXXXX and only receive X, or if someone else does only X and gets XXXXXX, and either way, your reaction is "it's not fair" can be a sign of entitlement.

Anger, rejection or disrespect can be signs of entitlement because the circumstance didn't go your way, or feeling rejected or disrespected can be because one is used to getting their way, is a behavior sign of entitlement.

Self entitlement is about me, however, discipleship (prayer and study of the Bible) teaches us that humility is more of Him and less of me. By following Jesus' example, Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. He didn't keep score as to how much or "it isn't fair."

Can God peel away self-entitlement within the heart of His people? Yes, but what are the first steps to change our attitude?

In John 3:30, 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

This teaching in John tells us when the Lord becomes more visible to those around us and us around them, we become that light and salt in the world.

God is pleased when we are happy for those who receive blessings from their outcome, instead of, what about me? The same goes when we take delight in Him and all He does. His blessings are not limited and go far beyond fair.

Psalm 37:4, 4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

God bless you, sister.

The key to understanding Psalm 37:4 is to see that when you delight yourself in the Lord, his will becomes our paramount focus. Accomplishing God's will becomes our greatest desire. Thus, God's will and the desires of our hearts line up and become one in the same.

hmm I don't really get the whole entitlement thing, entitled to what?

I think you need to be grateful for blessings, though many of us have lived on crumbs all our lives. Sometimes we wish we had titles, but most of us weren't born with them...

The best seat at an event is the most expensive, if you've got the $$ I suppose you can buy it, but otherwise, you mostly have to sit at the back.

As for apologetics, I think people have to understand from other points of view just like the gospels have four different views and don't always agree.

Money is free to spend how you wish but most people don't actually have much of it, and they have dependents but if you earned it and was yours nobody else can really say what you do with it. If it was a gift, it's yours to do with as you like. Most people use money to pay bills.

You are supposed to look after your body as its the only one you have. It will last longer if you look after it, most of us don't have teams of servants looking after us...! Unless you are maybe an actress or model or something, then you get beauty treatment and stylists every day as it's part of your job to look good.

Do y'all think ambition plays a role with the feeling and actions of entitlement?
What are our personal goals? We know what they should be as soldiers of Christ.
So how ambitious are we? Is it for us, or for Christ? I think we all have entitlement issues.
When we try envisioning our behaviors through Christ's eyes, we get a different picture.

Father in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, might those of us reading pray about this.
Help us become the soldiers and prayer warriors you need us to be. Might we shine brightly
to be a compass for the lost still in darkness, bringing souls into your light.
May we all be more conscious of our behaviors, Amen.

Hello thenami;

Yes, ambition and roles can fill us with entitlement if we don't carry our inner humbleness and humility for Christ. I feel that ambition, roles and even accomplishment must also include our acknowledgment of capacity. Where did we begin from the start? Was it man who raised us, or God?

God bless you, sister and your family.
