Speaking In Tongues - Can It Be Controlled?

Ac 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Ac 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Ac 10:44 ¶ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Ac 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Ac 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
I guess its true that every mention of being filled with the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts, included speaking in tongues.

He says in Acts every time someone is filled, or baptized, with the holy spirit, they speak in tongues.
Most of the examples in Acts don't include tongues.
Normally, not all of the details of a particular event are reported ... Read any newspaper.
BTW, how's Paul doin' these days?

Not all Pentecostals believe that speaking in tongues happens without exception.
It is a gift of the Holy Spirit and no where is it written that the gift is not bestowed by the Spirit after a certain time.
As far as I am concerned it is just as valid as other biblical gifts including discernment, prophecy, exorcism, etc.
The confirmation (i.e. tongues) of a Holy Spirit baptism
has absolutely nothing to do with
the gift of tongues in 1 Cor 12 (1 of the 9 spiritual power gifts).

1Co 14:38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

I would not disagree with you. God works in His own time and not on the presentment of any man.

People who would try to build a case for the universality of tongues speaking for or by believers using Acts, yet own their own home, one or more cars, a computer..I-phone or similar, them I won't listen to.

Act 2:40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation."(Addressing the unsaved, yet No tongues?)
Act 2:41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.(All done and accomplished without Tongues speaking)
Act 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.(All done without Speaking in tongues)
Act 2:43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.( Maybe tongues were used, but the emphasis is unmistakably focusing on other gifts, and these gifts were restricted to the apostles....no mention of others manifesting any gifts of the Holy spirit.)
Act 2:44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common.(Context does not point to tongues speaking)
Act 2:45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
Act 2:46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,(Again no speaking in tongues reported here)
Act 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (( let us not go beyond what is written here. There is no mention of Tongues speaking in the context of Praising God here)

I don't see any mention of speaking in tongues here, but I do see a community spirit engendering love and charity.

Seems to me that where there was speaking in tongues, there was control, there was purpose, there was order.

Ac 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Is there a statement relative to the Church in 2014 in there some place?
What I'm seeing there is the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to the disciples who were small enough in number to all fit within that one house.
So, is there a specific point you want to make in there someplace??

Could it be that you are drawing attention to the fact that for all the talk about speaking in tongues, nobody seems to worry about the cloven tongues like fire that rested upon them??
Where do we hear about that rather important accompliment these days?

Well its the Word of God, and the same Holy Spirit, are you suggesting that none of the New Testament is relative to 2014? Or just the parts you decide to believe? I would suggest that folks who reject these scriptures, are willing to reject the truth that God has had written to us.

You can quote Acts 2:3 'till the cows come home'...it won't change the context.
People who want to study God's word in context are more apt to understand scripture than those who are threatened by it.
I never said nor implied that 'none of the New Testament is relative to 2014' Why do you want to twist my words in this way?? Are you so threatened,..so frightened by the real truth of Scripture that you would seek to cloud the issue by that sort of transparent subterfuge?
I really thought better of you.......that which you posted is so unworthy....so truth dishonouring.
Or, are you trying to say that we are all sitting in a house waiting for the day of Pentecost to come? Because that is all those first few verses of Ch2 are concerned with.

Right the Holy Spirit does not change...its the same Holy Spirit that came in the beginning that is now at work in the real Church.

ALL: Those that can, do, those that can't, teach. Someone who has never experienced the fire of the Holy Spirit cannot understand the text about it no more than one can appreciate the beauty of the Grand Canyon from a black-n-white photo. The word of God is a photo snapshot of events throughout man's history to whet the appetite of the reader to want to experience the word of God in their lives! Only those content with milk will ever have milk and God is okay with that. God is the only One right, okay? Speak on your own experience and not on what you believe the word of God means. If you want the fire of the Holy Spirit, ask for it, if you don't believe in it, that's fine too, but don't judge ill those that do. The work of creation shows a lot of wiggle room in tolerances, the same holds for the word of God. Now play nice already!

Isa 28:22 Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

I'm sick to my stomach after reading this thread and the other thread dealing with this. People are mocking God, testing God and you should be ashamed of yourselves. I believe in the gift of tongues and the bible is very clear concerning it. If you don't want the gift so be it. But don't you dare mock the almighty.

Amen..they seem to have little or no fear of God.

I agree that the Holy Spirit does not change......He works and has always worked in different situations in the best possible way. Are you saying that the Holy Spirit is locked into a set pattern of operation and can not minister to individuals in their individual needs??

He's the same, but the church is not even close to being the same!
And this is because of UNBELIEF.
He doesn't stay where He's not wanted, where He's not welcome ...
to be in charge of the meeting, and to be asked to bless the people in so many ways!
But, He's a perfect gentleman, e. g. He speaks in "a still small voice" (usually but not always).

Think He wouldn't like to heal believers of their problems, which are:
physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual (lots of those too)?
Think He wouldn't like to direct your church in some way or other?
Those with UNBELIEF say, "NO!".
If they believed He would, many would be asking Him to do it.
But, UNBELIEF stops all of that.
And that's why He's not in their churches. Guaranteed spiritual Truth.

Well the Word gives us the true pattern.

If you want the fire of the Holy Spirit, ask for it,
if you don't believe in it, that's fine too, but don't judge ill those that do.
Yes, but they are so deceived by the churches that they are adamantly against your position.
And they think they can use Scripture to back them up.
However, nowhere does it say that God's signs, wonders, and miracles will cease
before Jesus returns ... because that's God's method of spreading His gospel.
Note: most denominations gave up years ago using 1 Cor 13:10 as their excuse!
So, now they have no Scriptural excuse.

Paul preached the full gospel of Christ
Romans 15:19
in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God,
so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum
I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

Today's churches preach half a gospel ... all because of UNBELIEF.
