Suffering - is it necessary?

Brothers and sisters!
How should we understand these verses correctly:
"...He who has suffered in his body is done with sin" (1 Peter 4:1) and
"It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn Your decrees" (Psalm 119:71).
Is it necessary to suffer before fulfilling God's will or there is another way? :confused:

I believe that when the bible is referring to "suffering" it is mostly (not always, but mostly!), referring to suffering in the flesh, meaning suffering like forgiving when you don't want to or keeping your mouth shut when you'd like to tell someone off, or giving more money than you intended too because God is leading you too! What I mean to say is the suffering that comes from deciding not to be selfish and self centered and walking in love! I personally believe this is one of the hardest things we all have to do when we become saved. I have a feeling that some people would rather suffer physical pain than have to give up any possessions or "rights" as it were. My opinion...

While we like to look at our sins as being not so bad, and those of a serial killer as being horrible, the difference is indistinguishable when you compare that to the huge difference between us and an infallible Holy God. That big gulf between us and the worst sinners slowely seems to disappear in comparison. Paul refered to himself as the King of sinners. Can we then say we are superior to the Apostles and Saints?

A Holy God would love little more than to wipe out every cause of suffering in our lives. But, if he destroyed everything and everyone that had ever caused pain and suffering...who would be left? We're all guilty of it. We've all caused others pain, and we've all sinned.

Yes! but the bible tells us we should rejoice when this happens because we were counted worthy to suffer for his name sake..:read-bible:
 
It is necessary if God calls us to suffer for His sake. Not everyone is called to that. Paul is one example.
Acts 9:16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.
