999 out of 1,000 people you talk to will say yes when asked to pray with you. I usually lead them in something simple(A,B,C)and then expound as it opens up. But on should always be led of the Spirit before speaking those words...
A- Rom_3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
B-Joh_20:31 but these things are recorded in order that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
C-
Rom_10:9 that if you confess with your mouth "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
A small crack in a door is all Jesus need to get started but then there is so much more. It is all about His great Love for us is it not?

I think listening to the Holy Spirit, n following His prompting is most important.
I read the NT and each person Jesus ministered to, He said something different. Ppl have different needs and only the Holy Spirit can reveal that to us. Even the disciples didn't begin their ministry until the Holy Spirit came upon them. The Spirit gave them the boldness to preach the Word, and the healing power.
So we should ask for the rich anointing of the Spirit and then go in faith because God will be with us. Also, pray before you go so God can move ahead and first prepare their hearts to receive the Good News.

2. Why? He loved His creation, saw that it was good (Genesis 1:31), and wanted us to be happy living in fellowship with Him.
3. What did we do? Adam and Eve, chose to turn from God and now we’re all born into sin (Romans 3:23) and separated from Him.
4. But, God provided us with a means of rescue (John 3:16). He sacrificed His own Son who took on our sins and punishment by dying on the cross, and then raised Him from the dead to show His power over sin and death.
5. It is left to each of us to respond to what Jesus did. We must confess our sins, repent and turn from them, and believe on Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for us (Romans 10:9; Romans 10:13; Mark 1:15). Only then does God give us eternal life (John 10:27,28; 1 John 2:25).

Depends on the situation, but I would firstly ask for the Holy Spirit to lead the discussion and to give me wisdom and the right words to speak.
Sharing my own testimony helps but again, depends on whether I'm meant to share it with that person, or for another time.

There is no single "right answer" to this; as already stated, the Holy Spirit guidance is crucial because every individual is unique and every individual has different needs and walks a different path than anyone else.
As I am getting older it seems to me that the more 'formulaic' or doctrine induced a person gets, the farther away from true Spirit of the Gospel we get. Because we become "Religious".
Jesus said "Go" and give the world the Gospel; quite frankly if you read scripture directly to person that has an open door to Christ; something WILL happen. Reading the scripture to a closed door is vain and useless. God's Word alone is enough. To the Jews a stumbling block, to the gentiles foolishness, but to the thirsty, the Gospel is life giving water!
The key to getting a lost person saved; to whom I could refer to as the "Walking Dead", is get them interested in the One who can make them ALIVE! That takes Truth AND Grace IN Love which comes by the way of God through Christ in the Holy Spirit.
I like bringing up "immortality" because that piques an unbelievers interest "Eternal Life" / "Everlasting Life" are Christian terms. The world understands "immortality" and is so desperately seeking it through man-made gimmicks.

I don't approach people unless the Spirit says so. Evangelism today seems to focus on numbers rather than making disciples. To me, this has led to a vast majority of false Christians. They prayed a formula prayer and think they have fire insurance now and they continue on with their lives, unrepentant, making their latter state worse than the former. "1,2,3 pray after me" is just a spiritually deadly poem.
If the ground isn't first prepare, the seed will not grow.

It's not our job to judge a heart... just to be a seed sower, and obedient to the Holy Spirit to speak what He wants spoken.
The evangelists job it to bring in the numbers, and get the masses saved... it's up to the church (pastor and members) to work on making diciples. They should be working with the evangelistic team to get the information of the new converts, so that they don't fall back into ungodly lifestyles. For God will only judge them on what light they had, not the light that we think that they should have.
We all have to work together to do what God has called us all to do. That's why we are the body, and Christ is the head.
When I read this thread..Luke 19:1-10 came to mind. It reminds me that it is good to get to know someone first..like Jesus does in this story.
" He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. Thank you, CTurtle, wow! This really speaks to me as our church family is praying and discussing "evangelism" and how this ties in with making "disciples".
