The Promise (poem)

The Promise

Wandering in the desert,
My people followed Me.
As water flowed from rock,
My face they could not see.

Moses was their leader
and Aaron close beside.
With staff in hand he lead -
There was no place to hide.

The Way was straight and narrow
though they traveled all around.
They criticized and grumbled
to the man their God had found.

God provided them with manna:
He met their fleshly need.
"We want more" some argued
so on quail they could feed.

A leader strong yet humble
he lead them to and fro.
Should he have struck the rock again
to make the water flow?

When shown a land to enter
a few stood up in faith.
A land so full of promise
yet many chose to wait.

For forty years they wandered
still in that sun burnt land.
Refusing to accept the gift
from God's own mighty hand.

Then Moses scaled the mountain
to meet with God up there.
Their hands an idol fashioned
while he travailed in prayer.

Ten laws were carved in stone
by the very hand of Him,
Against whom so many people
so clearly chose to sin.

He broke them in his anger
and laid a challenge down.
If the Lord is God then serve Him:
the time to choose is now!

Some chose to stand with Moses
and serve their God that day.
Cold hearts were found in many
whom by the sword lay slain.

A whole new generation
grew up to know the Lord.
Born for the land of promise:
They took Him at His word.

From Slavery to freedom,
God's promise: just and true.
Through His Son named Jesus,
God's Word provides for you.
