The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil

when the bible says we die after eating the fruit, does it mean spiritually or physically...?
I really am not sure about these passages.
Hello Via;

When Adam and Eve ate of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they most certainly died in their physical and spiritual.

Genesis 2:16-17, 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

They both would go through the hardships of labor and birth pains, and their spiritual was their conscious of God when they disobeyed Him.

Genesis 3:1-24, Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18 thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

20 The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

Each January in the New Year I read deep into Genesis. Had Adam and Eve obeyed God I believe we would be living in paradise, forever and ever and ever, with God.

What are the consequences (Besides death)?
that is a very good question. to give a general answer we been reaping the consequences that seem to be increasing more and more as we speak a 15 year old shoots kids at school. parents arrested involuntary murder . because iniquity shall abound the Love of many shall wax cold. when the serpent said to eve hath God said . were still question has he said today

Would anyone want to take a stab at seeing if this verse is related to the ‘knowledge of good and evil’?…

Romans 3:20 CSB
[20] For no one will be justified in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

yes? no?
yes

And how would you say that acquiring the knowledge of good and evil has led to such tragedies as mass shootings?

has nothing to do with the fall
really how so
Didn't the forbidden fruit represent temptation? And it was from a TREE.
Also what is the thing with not opening the gifts underneath until December 25th. I don't get that. If someone gives you a gift, don't you open it right away?

There was no tree at Jesus birthday and when the magi presented him with gifts they gave them to his parents and they already knew what they were.

So not really sure how the christmas tree fits in with ....anything to do with Jesus birth.

How about a newly acquired imagination as a result of not being able to process this knowledge of good and evil?...

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Gen 6:5)
so, forget that people don't even know God, maybe this newly acquired imagination caused wrong ideas about Him, ,( guy in the sky thing, white beard, etc) or dont even believe in Him...atheist etc..( some people believe biblical God was/is s a evil being.. so all this would cause a wrong view.? furthering their separation...

Yes, it has more to do with the cross and the gifts found at the foot of the cross, especially the free gift of salvation, now back to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

i am not going into a lengthy discussion pro/against . we dont put up a tree our son is grown man just us .i am not opposed to decorating trees or lights or gifts. if it brings a child joy so be it. just tell them the Christmas story of Jesus . i am not even opposed to Santa Claus, i still enjoy charlie brown christmas Rudolph frost the snow man ,and the Grinch. its all in how you look at it .i remember as a child Christmas was a special time for me. as a young man i got up opened a present it was a Bible. i really didnt want a bible i still have it to this day it looks rough as i read it on lunch break. when i worked at the charcoal plant . looking back it was the best presents i ever got

I don't think id have enjoyed a bible for Christmas when young either. what sinful human would?.

but now, the more I understand it, the more I respect it. it takes me quite some time to understand it because I think it should be above my head....God knows where that belief came from lol

prolly because God is so divine and only divine people can get divine things

dunno....

so people ought to be putting up crosses instead of trees? Well they could make a cross out of the wood of the dead christmas tree I suppose.
I thought most people either burned them as firewood or dumped them..or put them in the chipper.

When you discuss something, nobody really needs to take it as whether you oppose it or are for it, it's not a debate it just is what it is. That's the whole point of DISCUSSING something, rather than debating it.

Think of discussing as hashing out your thoughts, I really don't understand why people try and get argumentative in a discussion or assume that people are going to attack them for what they say if its not the same thing as they say or they don't agree. Nobody is always going to agree.

I have no problem with Christmas trees, but that is for another thread. Now back to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

I recall at 14, being inspired by a Tennessee Ernie Ford Christmas special on TV, I went out and bought a bible. I read a couple of chapters in Genesis (got lost with the three rivers {Gen 2:10-14}) then skipped over to Obadiah and couldn't make heads or tails out of it. It was about 10 years later 'til I opened the Bible again.

I am still the same.

what stumps me most, is that God, when He wrote it, didn't make a concise version for the numptys among us , ( like me)so that one passage would be sufficient....oh wait, but He did.... I was too busy thinking it was more than a simple commandment.

Lets just Love one another....😊😊❤️😊❤️❤️😊❤️😊❤️

thats what I take from the bible the most....all the rest is just mere commentary to me. not saying its not to others. I think some people really have a gift of understanding and explaining it well, and im glad for that so much, because when other non believers try and refute the bible, the bible scholars really can shake them up whereas I cannot 😊
