In the Bible, the word sin – whether it is in the Hebrew or the Greek – actually means to miss the mark.
The reason this definition is so important is because it points to two things.
First, there is a target we are aiming at.
Second it speaks to our intention.
Once we know there is a target, then we can choose to hit it or to miss it.
The target is God’s word or commands and when we miss this target, we have committed sin.
What makes something sinful is when we know what we are supposed to do and we choose not to do it, then we are engaging in sin.
For something to be sinful, we must be aware that it violates what God desires us to do. This is not always determined by a written code, but is also evident by the moral code that God has placed in every man’s heart. For example, when Cain killed Abel, there was no written law that said you should not murder, but the moral code of not committing murder was written in Cain’s heart.
I like to say we are all lawyers. Why we have the law of God written on our hearts isnt it.
I think we make the best lawyers, because biblical text is the canon used to write most binding laws in the world.
We have the Holy Spirit who shows us wrong from right. Discernment.
Aside from that everyone was born with a conscience unless seared.
So really if we feel wrong about something, we should honor it.
I like the bolded text. Today while getting the day started I happened to listen to a Dave Ramsey short. Basically the daughter "in law" unmarried continued to inhabit the grandma's house because her boyfriend I guess was in jail.
She stayed on for a full 7 years without paying a penny to the family of the boyfriend. Nothing. No repairs, in fact she dirtied up the place and the mother to the boyfriend was worried that the place would dilapidate.
Long story short yeah the Judge got her out of there.
But I say that to say this, whether she knew God or not, this was wrong to freeload. I dont judge her hey, I myself have had some serious blind spots. Its just eventually to say God gives all of us Christian or not a morality towards situations. In this case the Judge and the Parents knew something was up - and so did we.
Time to get a hot chocolate drink before turning in for the night.
Rest well beloveds.
