Thoughts on poker?

I was baptized as an infant but chose to be baptized again last year. So I’m not sure if when you say “born again” you mean baptized or affirming in my heart my love and dedication to Jesus. My love for Him has always been there but my obedience and dedication started more in my late 20’s. But again, if you mean baptism by my own choice, only about a year.
best be doing some deep soul searching to be born again/anew is a new creation in Christ 2nd Corinthians 5:17 Born again is a spiritual birth. this is just me but there is a know so salvation that does not come from baptism or affirming . all this has nothing to do with poker that comes later. after you know beyond a shadow of doubt . you are truly saved at the church i pastor. we have a banner that says to be 99% saved is the same as being 100% Lost. baptism as a infant did nothing more than get you wet and be part of a religious ceremony. made the flesh feel good. the Holy spirit comes in a removes the old hard heart and replaces it with a heart that knows God. a personal relationship

Exactly! But the coffee with Jesus will have to be decaf as caffeine makes my heart race 😁

welcome skipper, to our place.😊

I used to love playing cards when I was little..
there were so many card games I enjoyed with my friends and family.
we had pennies and played for pennies. we played for fun. in good spirits. we even used sweets when we run out of pennies. then we used big money, 10p lol
and one time, just to be silly, we made some lemon meringue pies.
just for the losers. and they had to go on our faces if we lost hahaha

and as we got older, we played every Saturday night with our families. we really looked forward to a good family night in, yes we played for money, but it was all in good clean fun. we didn't do it at casinos. and we never got cross if we lost. but we did have to ban one family member though, because he started getting irate when he lost. so he had to go☹️

I really don't know if its a sin, but, if in doubt, don't do it, and....

enjoy it and have fun and be blessed by the Lord , because the Lord loves a cheerful giver and so even if you loose you really ought to be happy that you got to play in the first place and have so much joy with friends and family.

Hey Skipper;

There you go! You can take some good pointers from Via. lol!

Especially the lemon meringue pies 🥧 and candy. 🍭 😁

I haven't played poker, I only played card games like last card, snap, speed, patience and gin rummy
Sometimes black jack or some variant, but haven't played any cards in ages.

I think they are fun way to pass the time but have never played them seriously for money. I think Monopoly is one of those games that are quite evil/sinful though (basically, the point of it is to make everyone else go bankrupt)!

I play Scrabble, but not enough to play in a tournament. Sis just beat my high score.

Some people are seriously into games, like video games, which are possibly more sinful because of the violent nature of them (and time sucking). If you playing poker because you enjoy it and like the strategy, I don't think it's harmful. For someone else it might be but that's more the 'pokie machines' where they just take all your money.

What about Bingo or Lotto?
I like Bingo, but lotto...there's no real strategy to it. You just pay to buy a ticket and if your numbers come up you could win a lot of money, but the chances of winning are very slim!

I never said “champ” but I was raised in a Christian household, drifted into more earthly living (sin) in my early 20’s right around the time I first started learning poker, and started walking with Christ more in my late 20’s even though He was always with me and I chose to sin.
its not so much the poker with cards as its the money the Love of money 1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. poker for money can create a greedy spirit. i have seen paychecks exchanged in poker games. i played black jack for money once a 1.00 a and just for fun. i was doing good till another person sit down and would double up and take cards on 13 showing . i soon lost 15.00 i didnt have

I know I’m saved. I’m not really sure what it was about my post that made you think I was unsure.

Yes, I mentioned that earlier. But as I mentioned, the money wasn’t what I was interested in. It was the challenge. And I think pride was a component of that.

I think anything that makes you fall into the pride trap is sinful. I know in many disciplines people are encouraged to 'take pride' or 'be proud' of their achievements, but that is opposite to how a Christian is, because God gives grace to the humble and resists the proud.

If it's all down to you, then it's none of God.

isn't gratitude one of the antidotes to pride?

if skipper is grateful for his talent at playing poker will that not make things alright again?

just guessin'
guess again...

Luke 18:10-13 (KJV) Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

In contrast...

though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
(Php 3:4-7)

Hello, crossnote;

We have to praise God for Skipper's concern and question. We're all impacted by our conscious and spirit and it's good to open up and ask.

Thank
you for sharing these good passages.

ok to be honest i think you just got your answer .. understand i am not your Holy Spirit. but since you feel pride the rush of the game. you could get caught up in the moment. go to far..to me its like a auction you bid on something the auctioneer knows how to drive the bids up. for a person knows it they paid 100.00 for 25.00 item.. . the devil take this and create a stir

we all know our limits and drives. There are things i have to really pace my self on. . next have you had a born again experience

Skipper , I don't think it has been mentioned yet, but I would also consider the 'element' of Chance.
With God, there is no such thing. All His purposes will come to pass regardless of the seeming haphazardness of events. Here is a verse you might seriously consider...

Proverbs 16:33 NKJV
[33] The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD.

Hello all,

I’m new here so I’ll give a brief background. I’m married with two young children, work in the mental health field, doing well financially.

I enjoy poker. I like the challenge and the outwitting nature of it. I enjoy playing for fun with no money involved with people at work on our lunch breaks. I study the game and the more I study, the more I realize the amount of skill involved (although luck is certainly a factor).

I play poker for money once every year or two at the World Series of Poker. I play in tournaments that you pay a flat fee to join and you can win money if you finish near the top.

I’m struggling with understanding if it is a sin or not when I play in these tournaments. In my head, it’s not quite gambling as there is so much math and skill involved at the higher levels but I sometimes wonder if that’s myself or the evil one trying to justify playing.

I know the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention gambling but it does mention the love of money. But I’m not playing for money. I play because I enjoy the challenge and want to know how I match up against the best in the world. There might be some pride involved but I really do think it’s more of the challenge/test that I’m interested in.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on whether or not this is sinful. I’m certainly not addicted as I rarely play for money and I don’t play other gambling games.

Thoughts?
The Bible does not say that card games or games of chance such as poker are evil. Instead, the Bible teaches clearly about avoiding the love of money. Because the potential to gain or lose money in poker is often part of the game's attraction, it is important to evaluate what Scripture teaches on this topic.

First, money is not evil. It is the love of money that is a root of various kinds of evil.

1 Timothy 6:10-11.........
"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs."

Heb. 13:5..........
"Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have."

This love of money can clearly influence both Christians and non-Christians.

Second, the Bible warns against "get rich quick" schemes.

Proverbs 13:11........
"Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it."

In other words, those who gain money quickly tend to waste or spend it quickly.

Third, wealth does not satisfy. Ecclesiastes 5:10......
"He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income."

If love of money is the motivation for a person who plays poker, then it would clearly be wrong for that person.

I would say that poker is a card game that is neither good nor evil by itself. However, because of its association with money and gambling, it is important to examine one's own motivations in playing, to carefully decide if poker is an acceptable use of one's time, and to consider the spiritual impact on others when deciding whether to play poker.

I saw in the paper today, it was front page news, a story about a man who won lotto 5 times but still wasn't happy.

He was having problems with his latest wife. I just thought what he won Lotto 5 times how does that even happen?? The big prizes too not just $10. But this was in Australia.

He sounded like he was stingy with his winnings though..??!

I never learned how to play card games. Did always want to learn to play poker, but never had that great an interest. Been gambling twice. Well, kind of. Wife and I went to a casino once. We joined and got $100.00. I believe I lost $80.00. Second time was at the airport in Las Vegas. Played one round with a $20,00 bill. Lost it all in on spin and called it a day. I do occasionally play the lottery, but that's a $2.00 quick pick and that is that. I guess gambling is just not my thing.
