There is a burning desire in the hearts of all people for a true understanding of their identity. In some ways, this has always been true. But with the ongoing dismantling of absolutes in our culture, even more so, since many people have always looked for a sense of identity in their surroundings. Hence, all the focus on personality tests and assessments and quizzes. Many are looking for a quick, magic bullet that will easily and accurately tell them who they are, so they can have peace.

The problem is that true, personal identity is not an isolated, quantifiable commodity. It is — and has always, only been — a reality deeply interwoven with, and in response to, the
Heart of Jesus. The challenge is that love and intimacy and a true understanding of identity take a lot of work and time and patience (just like a successful marriage!). But this is our only true, lasting, unshakable hope.

“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-3)
