Walking in light and repentance

1 John - 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

We come across this above passage in 1 John. It is quite a powerful passage. This came across while reading a Bible plan on repentance. There is so much to draw from this particular passage of scripture. It very much related to repentance.

The 6th and 7th verse says, if we say we have fellowship with Jesus and walk in darkness (or sinful life), we lie and do not live a life that reflects what we claim. If we really walk in the light (that is stay away from sin), then we really have fellowship with Jesus. And 8th verse says, if we say we have no sin then we are lying and there is no truth in us. It might sound like a these verses are little contradicting. If we proclaim I am walking in the light and there is no sin, then we are lying. If we are sinning, then we are not walking in the light! So what is conveyed here?

9th verse explains it all. If we confess our sins, Jesus will forgives us our sins. He himself is light. He is the One who can make us walk in the light. We cannot walk in light by simply saying I am not a sinner. We cannot walk in light by our own strength and stay away from sin. It is not possible in flesh. It is possible only by confessing our sins and asking for forgiveness. Repentance is what it takes to make us walk in light. As quoted in the devotional, repentance is our action and forgiveness is God's reaction to that. God's grace and mercy is immeasurable that He goes beyond simple forgiveness as we know. His forgiveness wipes the slate clean and grants great promises which we cannot stand upon. The promise of eternal life itself.

This repentance is not one time deal. It is certainly the starting point. It all starts with it. However, it is a continuous routine until we are in flesh.

One could say we enter the light of verse 7 after we repent. If we don't repent, then we are truly walking in darkness for we are hoping the darkness hides our sin. The light exposes what we have done and repentance is the only way to get rid of it.

Amen!

1John 1:7.. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Walking in the light does not mean we are not sinning, because if that was true then why would we need the "blood of Jesus to cleanse us from all sin?"
The truth is we still do sin while walking in the light. The Lord God only holds a man responsible for the light that he does have. "Unto much is given, much is required". (Luke 12:48)
The more of the Word of God that has been revealed to a man, requires that man to "walk in" (walking in the light). Which is why it tells us "if we say we have no sin we have deceived our self's and the truth is not in us." If a man disobeys what he knows is true (has light), then he must confess his sin(s) other wise the blood of Jesus is continuing to cleanse him from all sin that he does not know about. This is connected to "spiritual" growth.

Amen! Sin is dealt with.

How do we, then, shine light on our sin? When someone brings out new information on a subject, we say they are shedding light on the subject. In this way, confession is the first part of repentance, bringing the sin to light. That is the first step into light. Darkness then flees.

No man was, or is saved in a "time based" world, but before the world was ever created!! This salvation is useless until that man learns what he has through the Gospel (light), and then believes it, which in turn causes that man to experience the "new birth"

2Tim 1:9.. Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Jesus came to "destroy death", and he did so by bringing life, and immortality to light through the Gospel.

2Tim 1:10.. But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

The Kingdom of God is based on "revelation" (light through information) "The entrance of his Word gives light." Light (life, knowing) destroys darkness (death, not knowing)
The Gospel does not give life, it brings the life that was already given by God in the beginning to those who hear it, and believe it today. "...hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:"

No man can at any time experience the Kingdom of God or it's benefits contained within the promises of God until he first finds out what God has given him through the Gospel, and then believe it, including salvation.

Walking in the light is knowing, walking and believing in what the Lord God has already given you from the beginning through the Gospel.

This verse doesn't support your statement: "No man was, or is saved in a "time based" world, but before the world was ever created!!"
The verse : "Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,"

The verse does not read "Who hath saved us...which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began." The "which was given" is "his own purpose and grace". He did have a purpose and grace for us before the world began. Even though there is a purpose for something, that doesn't mean that the purpose will be accomplished, especially when we as the "something" interfere with the plans.

This part is right on: No man can at any time experience the Kingdom of God or it's benefits contained within the promises of God until he first finds out what God has given him through the Gospel, and then believe it, including salvation.

Walking in the light is knowing, walking and believing in what the Lord God has already given you from the beginning through the Gospel.

Are you suggesting the Lord God does not know all those who will come to salvation? Is the Lord God sitting on the side lines waiting to see what will happen?
How many of all the Father has given to Jesus will come to him? How many did Jesus say he would lose of all the Father has given him?

Eph 2:5.. even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Eph 2:6.. and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

Were you born when this took place?

Rom 8:30.. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

When do you suppose this happened. This is all pas tense!!

When were the names in the "Lambs Book of life" written?
