What do I do?

I have a bench on my porch and I had a small bag of potting soil open and on the bench. I was standing on the porch this morning and happened to look into the bag and there is a bird's nest in it. It's one of the coolest things I've ever seen, with these two tiny, itty bitty eggs in it.

I didn't touch it or anything and I am trying to keep my dogs away from it. So far they haven't bothered it. However, I'm afraid that when the eggs hatch and the birds are chirping, my Weimaraner will think they are lunch.

What can I do? Can I move the bag? I have heard if you touch the eggs the mother won't have anything to do with them, but how about if I just carefully move them to a higher place, by holding the bottom of the bag?

What to do?

You aint gonna like this, but I'll be honest with you.

Toss the nest and the eggs.
The bird will build another and lay more eggs.

They aint gonna make it on your front porch and yes, your dog will very likely eat them.

Unless you plan to fence off your porch for the next month, keep your dog away, all over a couple of eggs, I would just toss them and the bird will not waste her time on the poor spot she selected. She will lay new eggs and start over. There is still time.

I know that sounds cruel, but..... well.
Come work cattle with me sometime, bird eggs aint that big of a deal.

It's my back porch, not my front. I don't wanna have to do this. If it's the only way, it will have to be a job for hubby for sure.

Wait ans see if the momma bird takes over after you move them, but she most likely will not as she will no longer view that as a "safe" spot.

Keep a can of ALPO canned soft dog food handy to force feed them if they do hatch, put them on the back porch with an incubator light and turn the eggs every 4-6 hours.

When they hatch, feed them the ALPO with the eraser end of a pancil, then move them to a cage until they are old enough to fly.
You can do it, it you are willing to put in the effort.

See I'm a city girl who was forced into the country by Katrina. So all this stuff is new to me. I absolutely love the rabbits and squirrels coming into my yard and have had to tell my oldest son that even though he's 35, I will have to resort to corporal punishment if he even thinks about killing my rabbits and squirrels. I feed them.

Even though this is not where I chose to live, I am very thankful that God gave it to us and I have realized some very cool things about nature and the peacefulness of country life.

Just to let you know, I don't think you're a monster. I called my Daddy, and he told me to do the same thing you did.

I am going to gently move them though and if they hatch and the mommy won't feed them, I'll do the very best I can to save them. I really want them to live. Gonna give it my best shot.

And you are a person of compassion, respect for Gods creation, and love for a tiny thing that hasn't even been "born" yet.

I have raised many many birds, chickens, parrots, I even raised a crow one time that got hit by a car.

I will do anything I can to help you get through this. Canned dog food on a pencil, and shove it down their gullet...(don't worry, they will do most of the work for you..) is the best food while they are young.

R4TS is right. I also am like that with a little critter. Unless I smash it like a slug or something....I got tender feelins for them. if they die I cry, if they live I rejoyce!! our God is all vigilant. No matter how small to big an amebia to a hump back whale Jesus knows what is alive or died, but HE still provides. Do what you can Cheri sis. i been there dun that with sucsess n failure. it is what it is sis God Bless you for tryin n carin.

Well the way that I see it you will just have to try and protect the nest when the babies come as your dog will try to get them, but just to trash the nest and eggs no way, as it has been said God has made all creatures great and small,so with little birds yes try to look after them, you don't know they may sing a song for you in the mornings. they know if they are being looked after.

Put some dog repaliant around near the nest that could help save them from your dog.

If you are going to try to save them, try to avoid having to rear them by hand: for six weeks or so you can't go away for longer than a few hours, unless you take them as well. I suggest you try to move the nest up out of reach from the ground, just a little bit each day so the bird doesn't notice, say six inches a day, until it's up near the roof, maybe tie some wire around the bag and hang it from a hook or nail and then it's easy to pull up.
