I agree with those Bible scholars who think it spoke volumes when in John 19:9 Pilate asked Jesus “Where are you from”... and not “What city or region are you from”. I believe Pilate’s marveling and the way he asked this question suggests a deeper anxiety on his part than would any concern about following a religious or political law.

I think pilot was unnerved when Jesus was not groveling and pleading for His life. That combined with the warning from his wife.
