Where the Red Fern Grows
By Wilson Rawls
Where the Red Fern Grows is a beautifully written, heart-touching story of one boy and his two red hunting hounds. Set in the rustic Ozark Mountains, Billy has always wanted a dog - but not just one dog - two. Everyday, Billy hoped and prayed to God that one day he'd get his two dogs, his two special hunting hounds.
And so it happened.
Little Ann and Old Dan are two very special hounds. Not only has Billy trained and raised them to be the finest hunting team in the valley, he has made a special bond that only a boy and his best friends can understand. Where the Red Fern Grows shows a deeper side to the animal helper, a side where just not loyalty and obedience show through, but emotions and the greatest feeling of all - love, the deepest kind of love.
This book, while it is a children's themed book, is very all-age appropriate. It is beautifully written in a first-person style; while the "country-ish" dialogue and feel may be annoying to some it helps you relate with the characters ever more. Billy's character, as a boy in the mountains who grew and lived there, even brings more of all feel to the story.
I give this book 5 stars. It's a classic, a masterpiece.
Where the Red Fern Grows teaches us not only about love, friendship, and trust, but also a little about God's Nature, and other things that are hard to put into words. While some may find some of the ideas on animal's feelings and emotions improbable, this book should not make you crinkle your eyebrows just because you don't agree with all its statements.
I must warn you, however, this is a book that will make tears come to your eyes at the end, it is sad, touching, and beautiful at the same time. The devotion, the love...I can still feel it in my heart - and that says a lot!
