Sign of Jonah

In Matthew, when Jesus said that evil people are the ones who want to see a miracle for a sign, but they won't get one they'll only get the sign of Jonah.

What did He mean?

I'd look it up but I gotta run, just using my brothers computer.

Thanks. :D

A wicked and faithless generation are eager for a sign; but none shall be given to them except the sign of Jonah." and He left them and went away. Matthew 16:4

"But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.'" Luke 16:31

"A wicked and adulterous generation - Ye would seek no farther sign, did not your wickedness, your love of the world, which is spiritual adultery, blind your understanding. Wesley

16:1-4 The Pharisees and Sadducees were opposed to each other in principles and in conduct; yet they joined against Christ. But they desired a sign of their own choosing: they despised those signs which relieved the necessity of the sick and sorrowful, and called for something else which would gratify the curiosity of the proud. It is great hypocrisy, when we slight the signs of God's ordaining, to seek for signs of our own devising." Matthew Henry

I think this is like the chidren playing in the market, 'we played the flute for you and you did not dance,' Matt 11:17

or like the ones who followed Him for His provision and not for who He is; they didn't really care who He was, they were more interested in snapping their fingers at Him

:goodpost::amen:Least.

I like the man on the cross that needed nothing to believe, he had faith in the LORD because of who the LORD is and not all that miracles he preformed, he had true faith as we need today.

Praise the Lord and all glory to God! The thief on the cross,- repentant in heart, acknowledging his guilt and just punishment, turns to the Author and Perfector of his God-given faith - (believing the Holy Spirit's testimony that Jesus is Lord),- pleads to Him with faith 'Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom,' and he was told "Truely I say to you, today you shall be with me in paradise." The thief had nothing to boast of-but rather sorrow over and come to God as a broken, begging, unworthy, sinner. Jesus heals sick souls, and saves sinners, all glory to God who has mercy and has not destined us for wrath but for obtaining the salvation of our souls through and in Him, by His grace.

When Jesus speaks of the "sign of the prophert Jonah" Matt. 16.4, he is reiterating what he has already said in 12:38-40. Jonah's miraculous escape authenticated his preaching, justg as the resurrection of Jesus will do the same. Three days and three nights was a Jewish idiom for a period covering parts of three 24 hour days and nights. Ref: Esther. 4:16-5.1 and 1 Sam. 30.12-13.

This reference to resurrection would really annoy the Sadducees, who didn't believe, as the Pharisees did, in angels, demons, the resurrection etc., (That is why they were "SAD YOU SEE" (Sorry for that old chestnut).

We can never make sense of our Lord Jesus Christ unless we understand the cross, the resurrection and His ascension. Everything he did and said carries that focus.

The Pharisees and Sadducees had robbed their religion of its true power by making it a system of rules and regulations which could be carried on without any active participation by God Himself. They robbed God of his role in their lives. Sad to say many of our liberals today have done the same, and we must beware of any teaching that draws our focus away from Christ and his cross.

God Bless you as we learn together.

Actually 3 days and 3 nights means exactly what it says.
No more and no less.

Jeanann would be correct here.

From e-sword
John Wesley’s explanatory notes.

Three days and three nights - It was customary with the eastern nations to reckon any part of a natural day of twenty - four hours, for the whole day. Accordingly they used to say a thing was done after three or seven days, if it was done on the third or seventh day, from that which was last mentioned. Instances of this may be seen, 1Ki_20:29; and in many other places. And as the Hebrews had no word to express a natural day, they used night and day, or day and night for it. So that to say a thing happened after three days and three nights, was with them the very same, as to say, it happened after three days, or on the third day. See Est_4:16; Est_5:1; Gen_7:4, Gen_7:12; Exo_24:18; Exo_34:28. Jon_2:1.

Highly recommended.

So, to say three days and three nights, it could mean a part of the first day, the first night, the whole second day, the second night, and part of the third day.

So it could mean less than three days and three nights as we understand three days and three nights.

And like the Sabbath, for the Hebrews, the Sabbath started at sunset on Friday night.
With our understanding, we could call it one night and one day, but the Sabbath day is just that, the Sabbath day. Not the Sabbath night and day.

So, he could have said any other name of a man who had returned from the dead, such as Lazareth? Instead, he used Jonah? Sorry, but I still don't get it. It was interesting about the Pharisees and Sadducees, though. I don't think I every understood them. Bonnie

He used Jonah as an example because Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale . I am not sure how this relates to Lazareth . He used Jonah because it forshadows Jesus resurection in the OT.

I believe you are talking about Lazarus, not Lazareth?

If so, Lazarus was in the tomb for “four” days, not three.

I am not that good at spelling and there is no spell check here and I thought that is who Bonnie was referring to and thought she had the right spelling as I had put lazarus and then it didn't look right ....... Duh !!!!

Don’t feel bad.
I’m not immune to brain farts either.

Do what I do, blame it on the cold or the heat.
(I haven’t come up with an excuse for the spring and fall yet) :D

Hey ,yah the cold ..... I guess like you we have been in a deep freeze for four days now . Last night it was -30 celcius.

And now tonight it is snowing real bad . I don't have any more room on my snow banks .

Yesterday was our fourth day of the deep freeze. It made it above 0 F in the afternoon, and slowly has been rising since. I think the worst of January is over.

Who am I: Re: Post #7

Actually none of the scriptures you listed prove that three days and three nights are not three days and three nights.
As far as your understanding about the weekly sabbath is concerned there is no problem, but you don't seem to understand the annual sabbaths.

Days begin and end at sun down according to God.

The 14th day of the first month is The Passover. Lev. 23:5
Jesus was crucified on The Passover. Lk. 22:15 and Jo. 13:1

The women stayed with Jesus until He was buried. Mat. 27: 60-61 and
Mk. 15:46-47 That was at sun down, beginning the 15th day of the month.

The 15th day of the first month is the First Day of Unleavened Bread.
This is the first annual Sabbath of the year. Lev. 23:6-7.

In Jo. 19:31 This special Sabbath is referred to as a “High Day.” Not a normal
weekly Sabbath.

Since it was the day after The Passover we know that it was The First Day of Unleavened Bread. The Passover is the preparation day before The First Day of Unleavened.

Mk. 16:1 Explains that after this Sabbath ended the women went out, bought and prepared spices.

Lk. 23:56 Shows that after the women bought and prepared the spices they rested on the next Sabbath according to the commandment. The forth commandment to be exact. That would be the weekly Sabbath.

So to summarize; Jesus observed Passover Tuesday evening. He was arrested later that night. During the daylight hours of Wednesday Jesus was crucified and died.
Then He was buried just before the High Day Sabbath began Wednesday evening. That Sabbath ended Thursday evening at sundown.
Friday the women bought spices and prepared them and then rested on the weekly Sabbath. (Friday evening till Saturday evening.)
Sunday morning just before or right at sunrise the women came to the tomb just to have an angel tell them Jesus was not there and had risen just as He had said He would be.

We need not read anything into or out of the scriptures. Jesus said three days and three nights; He meant what He said and He was right.
I sure hope this helps.

I get it now, it was a story to forshadow Jesus' resurrection. Is that called a parable? Or is it like a parable, and is it really true then, the story of Jonah? Or just a story to point to the resurrection of Christ?

Also, sorry I mispelled Lazarus. I did mean the man Christ raised from the dead.

Bonnie .... All stories in the Bible are true. A lot of the scripture in the Old Testiment points to Jesus , His coming , His Death and His resurrection.

No I would not call it a parable . I would call it prophesy .

If you think I don’t understand the annual Sabbaths, that’s fine, I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t think I mentioned them and I wasn’t talking about them.
I was just throwing in the Sabbath as an example because it includes both a night and a day.

The only thing I was addressing was 3 days and 3 nights. If you have a problem with the scriptures, you’ll have to take that up with John Wesley. Everything in that quote box is his, not mine.
What’s below that is mine and all I was saying is 3 days and 3 nights, isn’t always exactly what it says. Sometimes there is only 2 nights.

As far as your summary, you make it sound like he was in the tomb from Wednesday evening to Sunday morning. That would be four nights. But I’m not going to debate that on this thread. It’s too easy to get off topic and I think I’ll just end it here so the OP doesn’t lose control of the thread.

Who am I:

John Wesley is not scripture!

I did not say or even intimate that the resurrection was on Sunday.

Jesus was buried Wed. evening and resurrected Sat. evening (April 25th 31 AD) three days and three nights later just as He said He would be.
