The Basics Of Overcoming Satan

Good evening from Scotland,

As some of you may know, I am a Pastor from Scotland and at the moment my wife and I are taking a more relaxed role due to the birth of our two new babies however we're getting more and more involved in our local assembly again and I've been preaching more and more. Tonight I'd just like to share with the readers here on CFS the basics of that message, I'm a lot more at ease preaching than I am writing a message but hopefully it might be a word in season for some....blessings...

There are many reasons as to why these attacks come and the scriptures speak very plainly of the ‘wiles of the devil’ as well as teachings on what our mindsets should be when these events occur but sometimes, it’s easier said than done. It’s this subject I’ll share tonight as teaching and hopefully it will encourage you just as much as me! I have to be honest, I have very little patience for speaking about the enemy but as he is around and here to destroy the works of Christian and the Church, we’d all do well I feel to at least be well versed on what God tells us about him and how to deal with these events when they arise.

.

For those of you who might not know, our main enemy in this life is called Satan however, this wasn’t always his name and neither was it always his position. In the beginning, God created the hosts of Heaven and one group of these hosts were Angels, most were similar in rank however three in particular were not just Angels but Archangels – Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer. Sometime between creation and the fall in The Garden of Eden, Lucifer decided that he wanted to be like God so he rose up against the Lord in rebellion however God, thrust him from Heaven to Earth like LIGHTING, casting him and a third of the Angels out from his presence. Now, the devil is the enemy of God, mankind and the Church with very few purposes in mind other than to steal, kill, destroy and lie throughout the ages.

.

Satan and his host take on the form of various guises of principalities, rulers of darkness, demons and unclean spirits bent fully on destroying everything from relationships, marriages and families to stirring up peoples and nations to rise up against each other. He is a dangerous and cunning foe and one we shouldn’t under-estimate as Christians, he hates Christians and the Church with a passion for the simple reason that God loves Christians and the Church with a passion so his mission remains the same in the lives of Christians and assemblies, to sow discord, disunity and mistrust. It’s what he’s always done and it’s what he’ll always try to HOWEVER……

.

I mentioned he is one who is dangerous and not to be under-estimated and this much is true but I’ll say it again, HOWEVER, it is nothing, not even close, not even on the same scale as the power of the living God, the creator the maker of Heaven and Earth his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. To compare would be laughable, I’m not even sure after all this time if you can but if were to try, I’d say the forces of darkness are like a speck of dust on my sofa and God is every square inch, of the whole universe – even then the comparison falls short. Satan is we must be aware of but God is the one we should be amazed by!

.

Now, you might be reading the above and think well why doesn’t God just destroy Satan and his hosts? Why does he allow him to continue? This my friends is one of the great mysteries of the Christian life and one which we simply say, God knows! It makes no real difference, it is what it is, but although Satan can attack us flesh and blood Christians, God hasn’t left us answerless or defenseless when it comes to dealing with our daily foe. Before we do look at the teaching let me just say this, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, if you’re born again and trusting him (even a little) then you have within you, the most powerful spirit in existence, the Holy Ghost.

.

God actually gives us a great window into this world we can’t see and it’s the example we find in the Book of Job. Again for our less experienced readers, Job was a righteous man in the eyes of God and one day, the sons of God (the Angels) assembled themselves together and Satan came in among them to which God said, “where did you come from Satan”. The Lord went on to ask the devil if he had considered his righteous servant Job and said there was none like him, a just and upright servant to which the devil replied, he only worships you because you protect him, let me have a time with him. This request from Satan was granted by the Lord with conditions set upon him that Job was not to be killed. What followed was pretty horrific, the devil covered Job in boils from his head to his toes, he killed Jobs family with the winds and he stirred up his neighbours to destroy all his wealth, which was plenty. In the end, God turned up and ended the temptation of Job and restoring to him double which he’d had before.

.

This event gives us a tremendous amount of revelation about the inner workings of this realm, it shows us that God and Satan actually do converse, that Satan is indeed the accuser of the righteous and that at times, he can be given the power to sift an individual physically, emotionally even being given limited power over the elements (the wind) for a time. This would be quite a fearful thought for anyone to consider, the example of Job was extreme however, that’s only half the story. You’ll see that God does indeed divinely protect his children, we see that Satan himself had to ask God’s permission and when God gave it, he was given limited power for a limited time. We see a God his is absolutely in control, a God in his wisdom granting this access but when the access was given, it began when God said, it went in a way that God said and it ENDED when he said, GOD IS SOVEREIGN!

.

This is a very extreme example but the reason that I used it, was to show just how much God is in control even in the most severest of attacks. God is sovereign, there is absolutely no question about it and at times we might not understand the process but God will always be working for our good to build us and teach us. God tells us that the devil is indeed the accuser of Christians and that he fires darts at us, as attacks on our lives and families. He will do anything to destroy our view of God and make no mistake, he’ll keep trying so what does God tell us about defending and resisting?

.

There’s a simple answer to this, scriptures tell us to ‘submit ourselves to the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you’. Many move straight into trying to resist him with prayer, fighting back with words and generally trying to take him on on our own however, the bit we sometimes overlook is ‘submit yourself to the Lord’. One of the Devils main aims in these kind of situations is to take the Glory off God and turn our attention to him, he wants our attention, he wants to be glorified and he wants our amazement of him but again, the Word tells us not to rail back accusations at him but to submit ourselves to God.

.

Jude – “yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, DID NOT bring against the devil any railing accusations but said, THE LORD REBUKE YOU”. Even Michael didn’t fight back in the way we might think, Michael preferred to submit himself to God and not be provoked by Satan, he would not drawn into an exchange with him and Michael would not, take his focus from his Lord. I’ve heard so many sermons over the years about talking back to Satan, about fighting him, warfare with him yet, the Word teaches us the foundation of our warfare, submission to God. Michael could have took on Satan in these ways and believe you me, in the end times he will fight Satan again but this passages teaches us the key, submit yourself to God’s plans and God’s purposes and when Satan fires his darts, “THE LORD REBUKE YOU!”.

.

Make no mistake though, God is Sovereign and we haven’t even scratched the surface of Jesus Christ yet, we haven’t even discussed Jesus overcoming Satan in the wilderness, in the garden and on the cross. We haven’t even spoke about Jesus being victorious over the forces of darkness, about all power in heaven and earth has been given to him and that power rests within you! Friends the Word tells us the darts will fly, the devil will try to deceive us and destroy God plans for your life but the scariest spirit imaginable resides within you, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit so when the fiery darts come, follow the example of Michael, “The Lord Rebuke you” and let Jesus fight your battle! Be aware of the Devil but be AMAZED BY GOD….

.
During our season of babies and website work, we've received many attacks and normally in the form of accusations from those who profess to be saved, loving and compassionate Christians however the more and more we step back into our role we can see just how much God has been working in our lives to toughen us up for the road ahead. God bless and I hope you enjoyed....

Thanks bro Steve, for taking the time to share these things with us. Oh the mighty power of "not trusting" in ourselves but only in Gods grace. May the God of "peace" crush satan under your feet;)

You now brother Steve, I came up in the WOF and still have some of those concepts of "rebuking the devil" etc.. I do not discount that there is a place for that in some battles. But since I have come to understand that grace is a Spirit that works not according to my religious zeal but according to my admitted weakness and that I cant fight every battle and need Gods strength at all times . Its just a different mindset about "spiritual warfare" and the cool thing is that much of the "striving against the devil" that I thought was faith, I have now come to understand was just my unbelief and the thing that satan wanted. Like Peter who boasted he would not be moved, and then a little girl and a chicken made him a liar. But John was the steady one and boasted not but in Jesus love for him. There is a power that I have yet to understand in my weakness, like all things I will press on... Thanks again for the post, you caught me right before my Sunday nap.. so I really just got a good reading of your teaching... blessings Mitspa

This was wonderful!! Thank you. It answered so much questions that I had. I would love to receive more things like this that you wrote from you. I love reading things like these instead of the bible. I like variety, I like to learn and things like this explain a lot to me that I don't catch in the bible or fully understand. Once again thank you and I hope to receive posts from you.

Thank you so much Magdalena, that's such an encouragement. My wife and I are slowly moving back into our Pastoral role in our local church however we have been really enjoying spending some time on this forum meeting Godly fellow believers like yourself. Hopefully this is appropriate to say here on CFSbut I do have a Blog Page attached to our main website with a feature called Questions Answered which you might enjoy. It's a series of articles on some of the most common Christian questions, there also a series I'm building called "The Easy Bible Guide" which is a free resource for Christians so they can easily understand God's Word. Thanks again for your comments, really encouraging, especially today!

I was unable to find the seven ages of mankind article. I was looking forward to going through that one.

I read through this several times, the spirit of something is more important than being 100% right about something. You mentioned the Devil being God's enemy, and The devil is a real Butt head.. .yes... I agree.

I have a concern about your version of Job though. Basically your saying that God gave permission to a evil lying spirit with no truth in him to Murder the mans children, to bring temptation to Job?

Our God does that?

So, just to be sure, I need another Witness in the Word where a man served God and God gave the devil permission to hurt the man and murder his family. If you would provide that, it would help my notes here.

I need to know why James lied also, if you could clear that one up, I would be very happy.

Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
(Jas 1:13)

The literally translation is God does not use Evil to tempt any man.
peirazō
Thayer Definition:
1) to try whether a thing can be done
1a) to attempt, endeavour
2) to try, make trial of, test: for the purpose of ascertaining his quantity, or what he thinks, or how he will behave himself

I also need you to explain why God said this was without cause. If God was the one that gave permission then I need to know that also.

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
(Job 2:3)

I also would like to know what Job learned from this........Elihu said God would not do this wickedness or commit iniquity. Job was clueless through the whole thing.

For he (Job) hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
(Job 34:9-10)

Is giving permission to someone to murder a mans children not considered Wicked in Scotland? Here in the U.S.A You get life in prison for that type of thing. I never been to Scotland, so the values may be different.

2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

One more question just for my notes. Why is it OK in Job to take ONE scripture and make God out to be evil and get some understanding from it. Peter said we are not suppose to do that, unless you have that other place where God is really like that.

YLT:
Job 1:11
The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath--if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!'

Your right, Satan is the enemy of God, and ours............. Jesus said the Kingdoms are not divided.

Just clear those up for my notes please. Be blessed.

Hello, yes I can see why it can be a little confusing however the confirmation we have in the NT is that of Peter being sifted like wheat. Jesus said that Satan had desired that he might sift Peter like wheat but that Jesus had prayed that his faith wouldn't fail. The verses in James you mentioned speak of the fact that man is indeed tempted by his own lust and that those lusts can concieve and bring forth sin. The Job incident wasn't God tempting Job but allowing Satan to tempt him, what Stan desired was the destruction of Job but what Satan desired for destruction God used for good showing us man's inward sin, pride. Elihu was actually right as he was the only one not rebuked by God for his words showing that Job was indeed righteous and blameless but not sinless as no man can be. It is a mystery as to why God would converse with Satan, we see it also in the prophets when the Priest Joshu was brought before the Lord to which the Lord replied to Satan, 'The Lord rebuke you Satan'. The sifting of Peter served to all but rid him of his aroogance but I'm sure Satan thought he might destroy the would be rock of the church before he took his place as Apostle.....Hope this answers some of your queries, the sifting of Peter would be the confirmation of Satan's limited and permissive access to a believer life.....been there myself, a sifting is brutal but necessary in the cases of prideful men like I was and I'm gald the Lord allowed it....God bless and thanks for taking the time to respond....

Be blessed.

Just a quick one about the comment of the murdering of the young. Have you read the account of Joshu taking the city of Jerico (Joshua 6:21) - The Lord's command - "...both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep and ass with the edge of the sword....". What do you think of that account?

I have just finished reading 'The Blessing of The Lord' and it tells that Job as blessed as he was stepped out of faith into fear over worry that his children were sinning and would make burnt offerings on a continual basis. Job opened the door to the devil by failing to trust God.He made hi sacrifices out of fear and unbelief rather than in faith. Quote 'Instead of having God's faithfulness on his mind while he was making sacrifices, he had the curse on his mind...it eventually generated such terror in his life that he said "The thing which i greatly feared is come upon me, and that which i was afraid of is come unto me. I was not in safety, neither had i rest, neither was i quiet; yet trouble came". If Job had been in faith where his children were concerned, he would have made one sacrifice for them and said "Father, i'm giving all my care of my children over on You.From this moment..i'll never worry about them again. You said You'd take care of them and i believe You..." '

'When the devil brought Job's situation before The Lord, he didn't pick up on all that. All he knew was that the blessing was on him(a 'hedge around him')..He wanteded his hands on it and spoke to God- (in Job 1:9-12).'

The devil wanted Job to curse God, he already worked on Job to get him thinking that his children were cursing God. Job's wife told him to curse God. The devil knew that if Job cursed God, tje hedge around him would fall, he'd lose the blessing and the devil could steal everything he had.

Job didn't do that. He made other mistakes but never cursed God. God didn't say to the devil, "Here, i put Job in your hands.Do whatever you want to him".

God wasn't about to stretch out His hand against Job. He never agreed to the devil's suggestion. What He said to the devil was, "Behold, he is already in your hand". Behold means to look and see. Wake up and pay attention.

Job had already opened the door to the devil. God just told the devil the truth. Job had let down his hedge of protection with his own fear. He had already put himself into the devil's hand. God didn't lie about that as much as He loved Job.

Once the devil realized that, he went after Job. Everything that then happened was ti pressure Job into cursing God but Job didn't. A young preacher came to help straighten things out and Job stepped back inti faith and the blessing came back into operation destroying the curse .

God never specifically told Joshua to kill all the children. It was Joshua that drew not "HIS" hand back. God did say do the same to AI as you did to Jericho. We don't see a disapproval either.

1 Samuel 15:2-3 And Deu 20:18- God does say kill them all.

However, this is War. God has no covenant with these people or children. It is night and day from God giving permission to the devil to murder the children of someone that served him.

We must know the difference between those that are in covenant with God and those that are not. There is a difference, big difference.

The child is sanctified by the believing Parent. 1 Co 7:14

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Those parents that picked the blessing, and life, their children lived. Those that did not, their children were not so safe.

God said there is none upright and perfect like Job. Don't mean Job had it all together, but best God had in that area.
Job gets God's approval, would be good enough.

I don't think your seeing it here though. Let me put it in another question form.

David, blew it big time, David had a heart for God, but gave the enemy place through Judgement. It says God made the child sick and the child died. Not really, but judgement gives place to the devil. Still, even if you believe God did that, if you stay on Gods side your safe.
We know what happened to David.

Moses, went and beat the rock. Lost the promise land over that move. We know why Moses missed out, no question.

Saul, Just never got around to fully Obeying God. Got to the point he was consulting witches for direction, it cost him his life.
We know why Saul died and failed.

Balaam. Had a talking Donkey, we know what happened to him. he disobeyed God, wanted that money.

What about Job?

We don't know what happened because we don't know what Job did, we just assume God did it and gave the devil permission. Job tells us himself what he did.

Just because we don't see something, does not make it God's fault.
