What Is God?

Sinners, people who aren't perfect and good... Which sucks because I'm not perfect :(

Luckily God's son suffered our punishment for us. Which is pretty loving to be honest, considering God is Holy and what not.

If things are evil they need to be punished, kind of like in our world, except we are more excepting of certain evils.

If jesus died for our sins, can't we sin as much as we want and never be punished?

This is another that I find confusing: some christians beleive in eternal punishment and others do not. Why is that?
See the Annihilationism thread in the Bible Study section. I guess it has to do with interpretation of verses, but I don't really see a good argument for ECT.

No it doesn't work like that. Sin hurts our relationship with God, so if you truly love him and appreciate him for what he's done, you will ween towards righteousness.

The Holy Spirit is also given to us to convict us of our faults, so we may work on them.

You can't become a Christian and then act like and speak like you don't believe in God. It doesn't work like that, you become a new person aware of God's will, and you start to have a relationship with him.

That's like getting married then going off to live with another woman. It doesn't make sense.

But jesus died for our sins... That debt is paid, so we can do whatever we like, right?

So, if I don't believ in your god, I will be tortured forever?

No you are already going there...faith is the solution...you have it backwards...you should know that even on the physical plane if you violate immutable laws (which He built in) there is a price to be paid.

Sure, but doing evil has it's consequences. The Holy Spirit also as I said before will make sure you don't want to sin.

Sin hurts our relationship with God. If you actually have a real relationship with him and believe what the Bible says, when you sin it will devastate you. If not, it's hard to say you are really Christian.

1 Corinthians 10:23

23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.

To use your previous example: I cannot know if I am a brain in a vat, so I disregard that issue. But but I get constant feedback through my brain about what my existence (even if it is virtual). So, for all practical purposes, I can know that exist in some way (even though that way is unknowable).

Same, same for gods. I can't know if they exist, so I disregard them. Problem is that I get no feedback from them, so I suspect they don't exist.

Because so many others have...

There is no evidence for life having evolved from non-living matter but you probably believe that...and absolutely no one has ever seen that!

So they will be able to show me evidence?

I have said nothing about evolution, so I don't know why you raise that issue.

But if evolution was true, I would not "believe" it to be so, but I would review the evidence and accept it to be true.

That is the difference between science and religion: science presents evidence and we accept or reject it. No faith is needed.

Plus, I don't buy the popularity argument.

Just because something is popular does not make it corect - people used to think that the earth is not the centre of the universe, but it not correct.

Also popularity does not make something morally right - slavery used to be popular, but now we know that owning other humans is a not morally right (Even if the bible endorses it - Ephesians 6:5).

So jesus only died for some sins and not others? Confused?

Which god is that? 'Cause there have ben quite a few in human history.
Why don't you ask him and see?

Pray to the only God there is, and ask him to reveal himself to you. It's quite simple.

Say something along the lines of

"God, whoever you are, please come to me now and reveal yourself to me. Are you the God of Islam? One of the gods of Hinduism? Or perhaps the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?"

If you have faith that God hears you, he will certainly answer.

How can you expect to have a relationship with God if you don't seek after him? Lol
